He originally studied Theatre Design at the Central School of Art and Design and then
worked at several of the major British repertory companies, and the Bayreuth Festival
before joining the BBC and has won several prestigious awards, bursaries and
scholarships including the Royal Society of Arts Award and Arts Council of Great
Britain Theatre Design Award. He was also a member of the BAFTA Wales jury for
Best Costume.

Recent Projects
John has just finished working on the Parallax feature ALMOST ADULT for
producer Sally Hibbin. He also recently designed MISCHIEF NIGHT (not yet
released), a film for Company Pictures directed by Penny Woolcock for whom he also
designed the John Adams’ opera THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER (Blast
Films/Ch4) which won the Prix Italia.

Ten years at Pebble Mill after graduating from Architectural Studies from
Birmingham Art School, and working on a wide spectrum of programmes from

CURRENT PROJECTS
Kate designed the costumes for Sarah Curtis ‘ feature ON A CLEAR DAY starring
Bob Hoskins, Brenda Blethyn and Peter Mullen which opened the Sundance Film
Festival and the Edinburgh festival and has been on general release recently. She has
also just designed Benjamin Britten’s ALBERT HERRING for the Aldeburgh Festival.

Costume Designs for Film & TV include:

Kate Hawley trained in graphic design at the Wellington School of Design and went
on to receive a Television New Zealand Scholarship to study at The Motley School of
Theatre Design in London in 1996 under the direction of Margaret Harris and Alison
Chitty. During this time she also participated in the Royal Opera House Course in
Draughting for the Stage. Kate works in Film, TV and Stage design and has the right
of residency in the UK so will not require a work permit.
