                        ODE TO OUR FOREFATHER
   A wilderness with timber tall,
   Beckoned its wealth to one and all;
   But only the staunch could face the foe,
   That lurked in the valley far below;
   For wolves had claimed that vast domain,
   Roaming these woods, that I acclaim.
   The cabin where our forefather dwelt,
   Must needs be strong and secure, they felt.
   Twas the only way to keep off the pack,
   These vicious wolves who would come to attack.
   Every even-tide, huge fires they’d build,
   To protect their own; lest they be killed;
   And after evening prayers were said,
   The family climbed up a ladder to bed.
   Yes! Faith mingled with Labor, and patience true,
   Kept this family safe, for me and for you.
   Just thirteen decades has passed since the day
   Sylvester was born, our records display.

    When Sylvester was a young man he was engaged in lumber-rafting on
the rivers of Southwestern New York to Pittsburgh, PA. While working
near Russell, PA, he met Hulda Webster who taught school at “Lower
Burg,” a small community about 2 miles below Russell. They were
married December 10, 1841. Their first and second babies died in
infancy. They moved to Kalamazoo, MI when their third baby was one
year old, but their stay was short, and returning east they settled in
“Brennan Hollow” near Onoville, NY. While Hulda was cooking pitch for
gum for her children the fluid caught fire and their house and most of
the furniture was destroyed. The family then moved to Wheeler Hill.
Later they moved to “State Line” near Onoville where he built a saw
mill and continued in the lumber business until he was aged. The
lovely maples on Main Street in Frewsburg were planted by Sylvester
Burch when he was a young man. The sisters and brothers of Sylvester
were Elvira Burch Quaint; Susan Burch Atkins; Zebulun and John.
Brothers and sisters of Hulda were Chester, Nicholas, Chilion, Almira,
and Julia Webster. The data of this history has been taken from the
original family bible and also verified by the only survivor, Ellen
(Nell) Burch Phillips. (Compiled in April 10, 1950 by historian, Helena
Phillips)
