           May 2010 Edition
A Chiphouse Neighbourhood Watch meeting was held at the Woodchester Flats Common
Room on Tuesday 18th May 2010 at 7.30pm. The Chairman, Barry White, began the meeting by
welcoming everybody especially the councillors, represented by Messrs Kevin Seager and
Adrian Millward. He also extended a warm welcome to Mr Chris Ray, a stout supporter and
long-standing sponsor of our Neighbourhood Watch newsletter. Our Deputy Chairman, Reg
Bennett, was unable to be present and had sent along his apologies, as was Councillor Carol
McCarthy who was absent with apologies due to a prior commitment. However, for the second
meeting in a row, the Chairman voiced his disappointment at the absence of a Police
           representation.

On matters arising, the Chairman expressed deep condolences on behalf of the Chiphouse
Neighbourhood Watch, to Mr Des Wilton at the sad passing of his wife, Nancy. Mr Wilton has
been a stalwart of our NHW from its inception and everyone shares his grief at this difficult
           time.

The following incidents of crime were reported:

            Date Incident Area
23/4 Break-in and burglary, cash and other items stolen. Deerswood
8/5 Set of alloy wheel centre caps stolen Pool Road
12/5 Garage door damaged. Gloucester Road
19/5 Attempted vehicle theft, door damaged Deerswood
22/5 Criminal trespass, damage to rear upstairs window Crispin Way

A resident raised concerns about several incidents of anti-social behaviour and criminal
damage involving a group of youths congregating in a local area. He said that this group was
responsible for trespassing into an adjacent property, breaking into and stealing items from
the shed and subsequently setting fire to it before running away. This happened again after
the homeowner had replaced the shed and even put up steel fencing on his property. While
the Chairman deplored the actions of the youths, he emphasised that it was precisely incidents
like these that needed to be raised and addressed at the Safer Stronger Community Group
(SSCG) meetings. These meetings were effective in identifying urgent issues affecting the
community, and when well supported, would involve the Police and local authorities in
tackling them as a matter of priority. Once again, the Chairman encouraged everybody to
make an effort to attend the SSCG meetings, the dates and venues of which are regularly

           published in this newsletter.

Mr Seager concurred with the Chairman and added that through his regular attendances at
past SSCG meetings, Reg Bennett had come to assume a valued role as spokesman for our

NHW. However, he added that Mr Bennett’s capacity to influence decisions and issues was
defined by the number of residents from our NHW attending these meetings. As priority issues
are decided on the number of people supporting them, it was vitally important that even more
residents from our patch turn up for the SSCG meetings and back the matters and issues that
           affect us and our community.

On the subject of Police absence at our NHW meetings, Mr Ray suggested that it would be
useful to send the Police an email to remind them of an upcoming meeting and to request
their attendance. It was agreed that this was indeed worth looking into and the Secretary has
been tasked to trial it from the next meeting onwards.

A resident proposed the idea of creating a website for the Chiphouse NHW to reach out to a
much wider and younger audience, and to get residents more involved in the NHW and its
activities in the community. Mr Millward commented that such a website would also be very
practical in encouraging residents to email the Watch directly with details of crime against
them, although this must not negate the need to report all incidents of crime to the Police in
the first instance. Mr Seager has also volunteered to donate a mobile phone to be used as an
additional mode for residents to inform the NHW of incidents of crime. All such information
coming through the email or the mobile phone would then be collated and published in the
newsletter. The contact number of this mobile phone will be publicised as soon as it has been
           set up.

(Afternote: A homepage has been created for the Chiphouse NHW on the website
www.neighbourhoodwatch.net. To access the homepage, go to the website, use the search
facility at the top left of the page and type in “Chiphouse”. Alternatively, search by county or
local authority area, using the find-a-group link along the top and then select “South
           Gloucestershire” from the drop-down menu.)

Our Treasurer Peter Higgins MBE reported a very healthy balance of £321 in our NHW account.

The next Neighbourhood Watch Meeting will be held on Tuesday 13th July 2010 at 7.30pm at
the Woodchester Flats Common Room. Please do come along and have your say.
