     Continental System
• Continental System –
  – Napoleon attempts to destroy the British by
    banning British goods from the continent
  – Charges internal tariffs to raise revenue
• Napoleon styles the French Empire after
  the Roman Empire
• Divorces Josephine and marries Marie
  Louise (Hapsburg)
            Victories 
• 1805 – war with Russia, Prussia, Austria,
  Sweden, Britain
  – French defeat all with a well trained and
    equipped that used good tactics
• Austerlitz – battle in which Napoleon
  defeats Austria and Russia
  – Often cited as a major triumph and evidence
    of Napoleon’s prowess
• Defeats at the hands of the French cause
  some (Prussia) to rethink their approach to
  war
             Defeats 
• Trafalgar – naval battle in which Napoleon’s
  naval power in the Mediterranean was
  broken, also causes a rift with Spain
• 1808 – Invasion of Spain (to conquer
  Portugal)
  – Overthrew Spanish King, makes brother King
  – Underestimated Duke of Wellington, resistance
    of Spanish people
  – Spanish fight back guerrilla style
  – Defeat here shows other nations that it is
    possible
                      Russia
• Tsar Alexander I decided he needed to sell grain to
  Britain
• Spring 1812 – Napoleon sets off with 600,000
  troops to crush Russia
• Russians use a systematic retreat to draw him
  deep into the country
• Lure Napoleon into battle and allow him to occupy
  Moscow
  –   Then burn Moscow
  –   Napoleon waits 1 month waiting for surrender
  –   Eventually decides to return to France
  –   Winter hits and, along with Russian raids, destroys the
      majority of the French army

• Battle of Nations 1813 – Fought near
  Leipzig
  – Deals Napoleon a huge blow
• By 1814 allies had crossed into France
  – Napoleon retreats to Paris
  – Mar 31st, he is forced to abdicate the throne
  – Sent to exile on the island of Elba
                 Exile
• Monarchy restored under Louis XVIII
  – Cannot fill the void left by Napoleon
  – Napoleon escapes and French rally to support
    him
• Allies stunned at Napoleon’s return
  – Send army to meet and defeat him
• Waterloo – June 15-18, 1815 – Allies
  soundly defeat Napoleon
  – Napoleon shipped to St. Helena where he
