        Agency Type: County
  Services Provided: Promotes the health and well-being of El Dorado County's
  communities by investigating stray animal and bite reports. Rabies control.
  Promotes animal welfare and cruelty prevention.
       Field Services enforces state and county animal control ordinances regulating
  animal care and welfare, investigates citizens' complaints of animal neglect or
  nuisance, and responds to loose, injured, or dead animals on public property
  and county roads.
       Rabies Control Program investigates all animal bites and human exposures
  to rabies, provides low-cost rabies vaccinations, and processes licenses for dogs.
       Shelter Operations houses and cares for stray, unwanted, or displaced
  animals. Educates the community on pet overpopulation, provides low-cost
  neuter/spay assistance, and assists individuals who have lost or found a pet.

                    Psychiatric Health Facility
  Services Provided: A 24-hours county-operated 15 bed acute psychiatric
  treatment and referral facility. Services provided to both voluntary and involuntary
  patients who are in acute psychiatric distress. The multi-disciplinary treatment
  team consists of a psychiatrist, social workers, nurses, psychiatric technicians,
  and mental health workers. Individual treatment plans are goal-oriented, intensive
  and short-termed. Family visiting is encouraged. Treatment focus is assisting
  patients in stabilizing their emotional conditions, behaviors, lifestyles, and in
  achieving their highest level of independent functioning.

            In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)
  Services Provided: In-home assistance to those eligible aged, blind, or disabled

   Multipurpose Senior Services Program (MSSP)
  Services Provided: Case management program for frail, elderly individuals

                                Safe Choices
  Services Provided: Prevention program against underage and binge drinking
  of alcohol, particularly among Latino youth. Serves youth living in South Lake
  Tahoe ages 12 -18. Actively recruites Latino youth to the program, but youth
  from other ethnic groups may also participate.
      Program consists of four components: 1) A planning group to help design
  recruitment and referral strategies for youth participants and their parents; 2) A
  local media campaign aimed at countering pro-alcohol advertising in the
  community; 3) Classes for teens and their parents to address alcohol use, binge
  drinking and family communication, and; 4) Evaluation of the program.

                           Teen Youth Court
  Services Provided: A juvenile court diversion program. Juvenile offenders can
  choose to be judged and sentenced by their peers after admitting to committing
  offenses. Collaborative program between Public Health Department, Probation
  Department, District Attorney, Sheriffs Department, and Superior Court.
  Recruited high schools students serve as jurors, prosecutors, defense attorneys,
  bailiffs, and court clerks. Adult attorneys from the community serve as mentors
  to the youth attorneys, and a Superior Court Judge presides over the hearings.
  Sentences recommended by the juries include supportive and punitive measures.

                    Elementary Program
  Services Provided: Created for families opting for a home-centered educational
  environment. A Charter Home Study Academy teacher is available to provide
  each family with curriculum, resources both on and off-line, and personalized
  assistance. Students work at their own pace and skill level; accelerating or taking
  more time to reinforce learning, as needed. The program insures a scope and
  sequence based on the California State Standards. Core classes are available to

                         High School
  Services Provided: Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)
  accredited program that serves students seeking a choice or alternative to
  traditional public school offerings. Course work and assignments are aligned
  with California State Content Standards and requirements of local high schools,
  and A-G college requirements. Individualized learning programs are developed
  for each student. On-site CORE and elective classes are offered as well as school-

                   Early Head Start/Head Start
  Services Provided: Child Development Programs under EDCOE.
      Federally funded programs for pregnant women and children, birth to age
  five. Year round program serves low-income children throughout the County. A
  minimum of 10% of the total enrollment is set aside to provide services for
  special needs children and 10% to serve families over the income guidelines.
       Family-centered and community-based services and support to promote
  healthy child growth and development. Serves the Western Slope and the Tahoe
  Basin. Center based programs are located in Lake Tahoe, Georgetown, El Dorado,
  Rescue, El Dorado Hills, Placerville, Pollock Pines, Shingle Springs, Camino,
  and Cameron Park. Services also available through a weekly home visiting
  program that offer children and families educational opportunities and support

           Golden Ridge and Blue Ridge Schools
  Services Provided: Operates a total of four classrooms with the Juvenile Halls
  in Placerville and South Lake Tahoe schools. Classes offer instructional programs
  to over 350 students in a year-round program. Primary emphasis is on acquisition
  of skills to pass High School Exit Exam and other requirements for high school
  diploma, improving students' communication skills, personal responsibility, and
  their ability to work cooperatively with others in a structured setting. The program
  objectives include modification of attitudes/behaviors and the strengthening of
  academic skills to facilitate the return to school and society in a successful manner.
            Eligibility: Must be court adjudicated.

  preschool classes, speech therapy, occupational/physical therapy, vision services
  and adapted physical education. Classes are located on 6 separate sites on the
  Westerrn Slope. Therapy services available through local elementary schools.
