Creating Graphs and Charts
Grade 3
Overview Objectives Standards
Students will create a poll on Zoho Polls and from the results create a graph and interpret the information. Following the lesson students will be able to interpret data from a poll and transfer it into a graph. 3.1.13 Interpret data displayed in a circle graph and answer questions about the situation. 3.2.1 Add and subtract whole numbers up to 1,000 with or without regrouping, using relevant properties of the number system. Computer with internet access Paper Coloring Utensils 1. Before beginning, ask students what they know about polls and graphs. 2. Inform the students about different uses for graphs/charts and different types of graphs/charts (Pie, line, bar, pictograph, etc.) and how they can easily show results to ones research. 3. Ask students to write a question that they would like to know how people would answer. 4. Have students get on a computer and go to Zoho Polls (http://polls.zoho.com/). You can have each student create their own account or create a few accounts prior to class and have students either work in groups, or take turns creating their polls under the same account.
Materials Procedures
5. Once the polls are created wait a few days until people have voted on the polls. (If you do not want to wait, you can instruct students in the class to vote on each other’s polls) 6. After the students have their results for their poll, have them create a graph showing the results. Allow it to be any of the graphs that you previously taught them about. Draw the graphs on paper and use coloring utensils to create them.
Evaluation
Students will explain their findings to the class by presenting their graph and explain the results
