                                                       POLEMARCH’S GREETING

                 Greetings Brothers and Silhouettes,

It gives me great pleasure to take this opportunity to wish all of you a safe and joyful holiday season!

A lot has happen since our last newsletter. We have had our Chapter
Retreat, Kappa Week and our Annual Awards Ceremony, the Grand
Conclave, the Province Officer’s Workshop, four chapter tailgates, and
another stellar football season. Our Cardinals are favored to take the city
championships. Go Kappa Cardinals! The calendar has been full and
we’ve only just begun this fraternity year. I know every Brother is
committed to supporting as many of our activities as possible. Please pace
                 yourself for the long haul.

I cannot thank Brother Art Price enough for his leadership, foresight, and
untiring effort to continually set the standard for our Guide Right Program. What he and his team are doing with
these young men is priceless. To paint the picture, we attached five pages to an already lengthy Program
Documentation form just to add all of the Guide Right activities.

As we look to extend our presence in our surrounding communities, support for our fundraising activities is
paramount. I am asking every Brother to assist where he can to make all of our fundraisers successful. We will
continue to increase corporate sponsorship to reduce the elevation of other fundraising activities.

Brothers please join me at our Pan Hellenic Awards banquet, November 21, where we will honor our Brother of
the Year, Richard P. Giles. Brother Giles’ hard work and dedication to the chapter as the Keeper of the Records
has been nothing less than outstanding. Let’s all show him our appreciation.

In closing, I wish to remind everyone of the need to protect yourselves from the H1N1 (swine flu) virus. We will
have hand sanitizers at all of our monthly meetings and I encourage all to follow the precautions provided at the
September meeting. I love you all but if you are sick, please be safe and stay home.

Again, I wish all of you and your families a very Happy Holidays,

                 Yours in the Bond,

                 Clifford McMillan

Brothers All,

This is it.

The winds have been swirling for the past several years and now is the time for this
chapter to take the next step. The 2009 – 2010 fraternity year is in full swing and
Brothers, we have an opportunity to make it one for the ages.

The Hampton – Newport News Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi has the talent,
wisdom, and drive to become the highest quality chapter in this fraternity period.

For some time, we have been known as the best unknown chapter in the fraternity. That does sound pretty nice. I
have heard brothers recall their personal travels to and from other provinces and other countries and attest to the
superior quality of this chapter. And with this being a modest industrial and military area, cementing that claim has
been quite an accomplishment. However gentlemen, in case you have not been made aware…our secret is out.

The spotlight is on us. The stakes have been raised.

Brothers, because of you, this year the Hampton – Newport News Alumni Chapter will no longer be described by
anyone, anywhere, as unknown. In a matter of speaking, we are moving up in weight class. Standing pat is not an
option, not after what we have seen this past calendar year. The Kasino Night last June defied description (though
I’ve tried). Kappa Week has become a summer staple in our community, a fantastically planned and executed
celebration. And a couple of young college students have reached out to the brothers of this chapter and experienced
their unmatched generosity.

Every element of this chapter should be proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish. But more is within our reach.
We ask so much of brothers like Richard Giles, our Brother of the Year, and Arthur Price, architect of our Guide
Right Program. Men like them have put our chapter in this position, on par with some of the larger and more
recognizable chapters in Kappa Alpha Psi.

So I am issuing a request to all who read this, not just our established leaders. You may be a chapter member now,
or you may want to become one next spring. You may even be a brother without an alumni chapter. Attend this
December 5th’s Kappa Cardinals Awards Program at Macedonia Baptist Church. See this chapter at its absolute
greatest. Allow yourself to become motivated to get on board. Hampton – Newport News Alumni is on a mission.

It is time for the best unknown chapter in the fraternity to remove one pesky word from that mantra.

Your in the Bond,
Stephen E. Penn

          SENIOR KAPPA KORNER
One of the goals for Senior Kappas this HEY BROTHERS! DID YOU KNOW…?
year is to support the Guide Right Athletic
Association by attending football, basketball and This past July, Brother David Johnson participated
baseball games. Another significant segment of that in a fashion show presented by the Lambda Omega
support is that we have adopted the Junior Football Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The
Team consisting of 25 boys to provide refreshments judged competition pitted Brother Johnson against
during and after each game of the 2009 football representatives of other NPHC fraternities. Our
season, beginning with the August 29, 2009 game. Spring 2008 initiate was victorious. No surprise
Although we established a $50.00 per-Brother there. However, the surprise of the night was the
contribution amount for this purpose, and for those announcement that a sister of Sigma Gamma Rho
Brothers who have not contributed to date, any Sorority won an AKA sponsored event! Talk about
amount of contribution will be appreciated. an upset. Congratulations to them both.
Another of our goals involves all Chapter
Brothers. That goal is to provide toys to students at
the Magruder Primary School in Newport News
(Chestnut Avenue) in partnership with the Toys for
Tots program. Accordingly, the Senior Kappas are
asking each Chapter Brother to bring to the
December Chapter meeting an unwrapped toy for
children in ages 6 to 12 (boy or girl or unisex) at a
cost of $15 to $20. The toy that you donate may well
be the only toy many of the students will receive for
Christmas. So, please mark this special event on
your calendars and in your planners, put on your
Santa heart and make a child happy!!

Chapter Brothers Generously Answer the Call

On Monday August 17, the Hampton – Newport News (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi received a request
from a 3rd year student at North Carolina A&T State University and a former Kappa Leaguer. He returned to school
prepared to begin his junior year, only to find himself in dire financial straits. He owed a balance of fees from this
previous academic year and needed additional funds to purchase his semester meal ticket. Knowing this young man
and recognizing what he is striving to achieve, members of this chapter answered the call. On Friday August 21, the
chapter’s Achievement Foundation mailed a check to North Carolina A&T State University on this student’s behalf
and prevented the disruption of his education. After this charitable gesture, the young man graciously sent a letter
expressing his sincere gratitude and thanks for the chapter member’s financial blessing.

Also, less than a year ago, the chapter raised money for a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA to go toward
his housing bill. He is a graduate of Warwick High School in Newport News and a recipient of one of our
fraternity’s scholarships.

Public Relations Committee Pictorial Directory Announcement

The Public Relations Committee is in the process of completing an ambitious effort to produce an official pictorial
directory for the Chapter. The committee has identified the November 14, 2009 Chapter Meeting as the deadline to
ensure that Chapter Brothers have their photograph submitted. Committee members will be on hand at the
conclusion of the informal meeting to take pictures upon request. If the committee does not have a quality picture of

Spotlight on 50 Year Brother…

                      …Sidney Williams

This is Part I of an interview conducted by PHI NOOPHY News past Editor
Vice Polemarch Roland Thompson with 50 year Brother Reverend Sidney Williams.
The reason I became a Kappa is … I was inspired to believe that what I perceived Kappa to be was something
that would enhance my life and lift me to another level beyond the drudgery of getting up in the morning,
punching a clock, then coming home in the evening and going to bed. There was something that I interpreted in
my observations of those who were Kappa who led me to conclude that they were in possession of something
that I wanted that I needed and that I desired.

The best perk of being a Kappa is … In the initiation ceremony, you do not get information just because you
ask, but like a good counselor, you are led to extract from the experiences of the process. We receive the truths
that are our foundation. The information came as a result of a series of concerted efforts. The final revelation
of what Phi Nu Pi is was like a wild experience that has general relevance that can be applied to all of life’s
circumstances. That universal application is an invaluable asset if one sees it as an asset that should not be
easily spent, but rather nurtured, cultivated and improved upon.

The best perk about my career is … I had a twin occupation that was centrally focused. I was a minister and a
guidance counselor. I have always had an appetite to get young folks to see that they don’t have to settle for
yesterday. The potential of tomorrow is sometimes so frightening that it is almost criminal. You just need to go
out and just grab it. Life is like a grapevine, it’s just there for your plucking. But you have to go to the grape
harbor, you have to reach up and grab them. They are not going to just fall down. Some of the grapes that fall
are edible, but the majority of them are not always worth picking up. I saw this as the opportunity to answer the
design of life for my calling.

At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is … If you can look in the mirror and say that as I look back
over the day, I have not brought dishonor on this day. I like to be able to, like the song, help somebody as I pass
their way, and know that my living has not been in vain.

My favorite pastime is … Still searching for knowledge. I spend an inordinate amount of time on the computer
Googling. One of the joys of retirement is that I do not have pressures to do anything. I am glad that I still have
an insatiable appetite for knowledge that is so elusive.

The one thing that I enjoy most about being in Kappa is … It difficult to prioritize. I am now in the evening of
my life. As I am taken back to the morning of my life in Kappadom, Kappa as it was revealed to me was such
an attractive commodity that I felt an urgency to try to share its potential with everybody. I began my journey
in Kappa at Howard University in an environment that my father believed lacked discipline. Believing this, he
transferred me to Shaw University where there was more discipline, but no structure, however, to continue my
chosen path in Kappa. While there was no undergraduate chapter at Shaw, there were 2 other young men there
that were pursuing the same journey. We joined together to establish Scrollers Clubs at both Shaw and St.
Augustine. We received our guidance and nurturing from Kappa members on the Shaw University staff and the
Raleigh Alumni Chapter. We were eventually initiated into Kappa at North Carolina Central. We partitioned
for a charter at Shaw, but the charter was issued to St. Augustine. A year later, our charter for a chapter at
Shaw was approved. Since this time, I have most enjoyed receiving and sharing the knowledge of Kappa with
others.
                                                                                                                      Page6
