									                            Elementary Sample Timetables for 2008-2009
The following information is provided to assist elementary schools in planning their upcoming year. If
any errors or omissions are noticed, please send feedback to Stephen Wright. (This document will also
available on-line in the Curriculum web site, http://www.curriculum.epsb.ca, in the “Planning
Instruction” section.)

Each grade is listed on a separate page, including space for calculations, to allow for ease of use by
classroom teachers prior to year planning. General statements are provided below and specific
examples of Grade 4 to 6 timetables are provided that accommodate the upcoming second language
requirement. (These timetables would be suitable for Division One also, but the allocations of periods
for ELA and Science in Grades 1 and 2 would differ.)

General Statements
Schools are required to ensure that Grade 2 to Grade 6 students have 950 hours of instruction per year
in each grade. (Example timetables provided are based on a 1520 minutes/week. Variables such as
specific school calendars, including PD Days and Days in Lieu will affect total number of hours.)
Instructional time is time scheduled for purposes of instruction, examinations/testing and other student
activities where direct student-teacher interaction and supervision are maintained. Notes about the
future requirements for second language programming are included. Daily Physical Activity has been
included as 150 minutes/week (minimum) of Health and Physical Education, with the intent that
schools will move towards 150 minutes of Physical Education per week.

Instructional time does not include:
 lunch breaks  recesses (must be two 15 minutes each day)
 breaks between classes  time taken for the registration of students

Required: (mandated) 950 hours of instruction per year.

Kindergarten Kindergarten is to be provided for a minimum of 475 hours/year. No
2008-2009 recommended times for individual courses/learning areas are provided by
                    Alberta Learning.
Kindergarten is a unique curriculum, since it includes both Learning
Areas and Specific Courses. Also, the Specific Courses, e.g. Health, do not
align precisely with one Learning Area. Course names include both Learning
Area and Program of Studies names. (LDC indicates Locally Developed
                    Course.)
Additional Course Titles are provided to accommodate scheduling needs
of the school. Note: Additional scheduling codes, such as Science, overlap
two or more learning areas. (See Learning Area for outcomes.)
