Dear PSA Director,
America’s story is the story of volunteers—everyday citizens who step forward to
change lives and strengthen our nation.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of our schools and shelters, hospitals and hotlines,
non-profits and community groups. By tutoring a child, reaching out to a
veteran, or feeding the hungry, volunteers provide hope and help where it’s
needed most.
Today’s economic and social problems require a new generation of service. Far too
many Americans face poverty, homelessness, and hunger. Half the students in our
inner cities don’t graduate from high school, and 15 million children need mentors.
This PSA is the story of Americans — from every walk of life and every age
— who have stepped up to be a part of the solution. They have built homes,
reconnected families, mentored kids and transformed their own lives. The
PSA, set in iconic American settings — the Statue of Liberty, the St. Louis Arch,
Seattle’s Space Needle and Yosemite National Park — features volunteers
telling their own stories about the power of service to change lives and make
communities stronger. The PSA concludes with President Obama calling upon
every American to make service part of their daily lives.
My American Story is part of United We Serve, President Obama’s call to all
Americans to volunteer in their communities. United We Serve recognizes that
our nation’s progress and prosperity depend on the active involvement of citizens.
Everyone has the power to make a difference and all of us should try.
By putting this PSA into rotation, you can help viewers make their lives richer, their
country stronger and connect their personal story to the greater American story.
