Beware Lest we forget God’s purpose for your life. – Oswald Chambers
For several years now I have been telling you what a special place Special K Ranch
is. The ministry here has fostered an atmosphere of stability enveloped in love for our
savior Jesus the Christ. The fact that we are a nondenominational Christian organization,
we risk the chance of becoming caught up in different theologies and traditions if we
are not careful. This is why it is so important for us to stay focused on the Jesus whose
teachings are written and talked about in the Bible. Over these past several years, I have noticed
the growth of our residents and staff in their spiritual walks. It is very evident in the way they deal
with conflict and with each other. It is truly becoming a way of life through the examples of Jesus
in the Bible.
This brings me to the reason I tell you these things. A couple of years ago, several government
agencies contacted us to see if we would be interested in helping them with some of their welfare and
community service cases. This would include allowing their people to serve their hours working at
Special K. At first, I was against this idea. We are a Christian organization providing a safe environment
for our residents. This is no place for people in trouble with the law or people on welfare. What
would people think? Then it hit me, you know that scripture in the bible about why Jesus ate with
the “sinners” & tax collectors. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does
your teacher eat with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the
healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy,
not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Matthew 9:11-13 So
how could I tell our staff and residents that the example Jesus showed does not actually apply to
us? Just think what these people could possibly learn from us. We may just appear as a ranch for
Developmentally Disabled people. However, God has created a safe haven for spiritual growth at
Special K, and we have all been learning what it looks like to be an example of Jesus. Now that
I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13:14-15 Maybe
now is the time to share what God had created here at Special K Ranch.
We are now assisting three agencies with their case loads. Stillwater and Yellowstone County
Alternatives deal with individuals who have misdemeanor charges against them for various reasons.
The court system has granted them the opportunity to work their fines off doing community service
for non-profit organizations. As part of our agreement with Alternatives, each individual must
be interviewed by us before they are allowed to perform their community service here. Another
agency that we are working with is the Department of Public Health and Human Services. They
have asked us to be a part of their Work Experience Program (WEX). This program is usually for
single mothers on welfare who are having a hard time attaining or holding a job due to little or no
work experience. They also must go through our interview process. In all of the interviews that I
have participated in, I have not found one that appears to have a relationship with God. About 20
people have gone through the program and were exposed to a life where Jesus Christ is the center
focus. Their days in the greenhouse are always started with prayer followed by spending the rest of
their time working alongside people like Bret, Shorti, and Rob. Just imagine Bret having a captive
audience. Any questions as to whether or not these people get to hear about the wonders of God? I
have watched many of them finish their program and leave Special K Ranch with a new glimmer of
hope in their life. How appropriate is it that God is bringing the Harvest to the Ranch and planting
His seed in our greenhouse.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
