Taylor Clark L. Wagner Carl R. Yudell Edward J. Zajac, Ph.D. November 27, 2007 To: Whom It May Concern From: Jill Kostel, Senior Environmental Engineer Re: Sediment Sampling at Goose Pond As part of the permitting process for the Goose Pond Nutrient Farm Pilot Project, The Wetlands Initiative (TWI) collected sediment and water samples from Goose Pond and these samples were analyzed by Environmental Monitoring and Technologies, Inc. (EMT). The Wetlands Initiative selected the testing laboratory from the list of laboratories accredited by Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). IEPA agreed to the number of samples, the sampling locations, and the collection methodology prior to TWI’s field work. IEPA selected the all water/sediment parameters that were analyzed for by the laboratory. In brief, sediment composite samples were taken from 6 locations that represent general borrow areas that may be “dredged in the dry" and 2 locations representing areas that may be "dredged in the wet." The “dredged in the dry” samples were analyzed for 5 parameters: TSS, TVS, ammonia-nitrogen, total lead, and total zinc. The “dredged in the wet” samples were analyzed for 15 parameters: TSS, TVS, ammonia-nitrogen, total lead, total zinc, cyanide, total phosphorus, potassium, dieldrin, endrin, gamma-BHC, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, methoxychlor, and PCBs (Aroclors 1016, 1221, 1232, 1242, 1248, 1254, 1260). In addition to these eight supernatant sample sets, the 4 background or depositing waters used in the supernatant test were tested separately for all 15 parameters. IEPA has received these results and has not found anything of concern with the results or the sediment material that will be used to build the new berms or enhance the existing berms according to Section 401 Water Quality Certification. In the following pages, you will find the analytical reports, a copy of the methodology received from for the IEPA analysis of hydraulically moved material (Method 2540(f) supernatant test), and a location map illustrating the sediment sampling locations in Goose Pond.
