ASME Buffalo Section Supports BEAM Trek Competition
BEAM is a non-profit organization consisting of teachers and volunteer representatives from industry, education, government,
professional and community groups. BEAM encourages, supports and prepares students from Western New York to pursue technical
careers. BEAM is open to all students with an emphasis on minorities, females and other under-represented students. Beginning at
the elementary school level, BEAM provides math, science, engineering and technical experiences through BEAM clubs, summer
programs, Internships, and other related activities. Student participation in BEAM programs, college completion in a technical
discipline and eventual employment measure our success.

BE A M T RE K 2 0 11 Co mpetit io n was an educational adventure creating awareness and interest in engineering with a focus on
using “The Grand Challenges for Engineering.” Teams of high school students competed against one another as they were challenged
by University of Buffalo (UB) faculty to prove their scientific and mathematical mettle in a brain-teasing race around the campus. Not
knowing what to expect, students found themselves having to complete various engineering tasks where they earn points and also
learn about conservation in order to obtain clues as to where their next task lies. The adventure’s climax was a head to head
competition between the highest scoring teams in a final task. All this added to the fun with one team earning the distinction of being
“Buffalo’s Best Engineering Team of the Future”.

This year’s event was supported by a donation from the ASME Buffalo Section. The winner of the 2011 competition was a team from
Orchard Park High School. The team took first place winning six trophies and a total of $3,800 in scholarships. October 2011

Mahendra D. Rana, PE to be presented the award at the ASME Mechanical Engineering Congress
Mahendra D. Rana, a local Buffalo Section ASME member, has been selected to receive the 2011 J. Hall Taylor Medal
"for professionalism and leadership in consensus building for codes and standards for pressure equipment; and for
technical excellence in the investigation, understanding and advancement of codes and standards for pressure vessel

The J. Hall Taylor Medal was established in 1965 by the ASME Codes and Standards Board as a gift by the Taylor Forge
and Pipe Works to commemorate the pioneering work of J. Hall Taylor in the standardization of industrial products and
safety codes for their usage. It is awarded for distinguished service or eminent achievement in the Codes and Standards
area pertaining to the broad fields of piping and pressure vessels sponsored by the ASME.

The award consists of a $1000 honorarium, a bronze medal and certificate. Formal presentation of the award is scheduled
to take place at the President's Luncheon, Monday, November 14, 2011 during the ASME Mechanical Engineering
Congress, November 11-17, 2011, at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.

Our congratulations go out to Mahendra!!
