I was a patient in Selly Oak 5/6 years ago. This experience led me to consider getting
involved in some way or other in the NHS and its future. Becoming a governor appears to

I have been in business in the city all of my working life.

I do voluntary work as a Samaritan.

I am also a mentor within the prison service.

PENN Dr. Rosanna Gertrude

Formerly a Clinical Biochemist employed by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS
Foundation Trust, my experiences as an inpatient led to my involvement in promoting
patients’ wellbeing. I volunteer in the Cancer Information Centre at the Queen Elizabeth
Hospital, became a governor in 2004 and chair one of the Trust’s Patient and Carer

These past five years have been very rewarding with many opportunities to talk to patients
and the public and represent their views to the Trust committees on which I have served. I
feel this representation is essential if we are to help shape decisions on the future delivery
of healthcare.

Care quality issues such as dignity, respect and compassion together with environmental
cleanliness, infection control, nutrition and information availability, have formed the basis of
my activities as a governor and will continue to do so if I am re-elected.

I initiated the Trust’s annual Clean Your Hands Campaign, vital for infection control, and I sit
on the Trust’s Care Quality Group which reviews and drives improvements in standards of

I am highly motivated and committed not only to protecting the patients’ interests, but
also to representing the views of people in the wider community. The opening of the new
hospital in 2010 presents us with exciting challenges and I am passionate that the Trust
should deliver and maintain the highest possible standards of healthcare to everyone. I will
work to help the new hospital gain a national and international reputation as a centre of

TRAYER Professor Ian Patrick

I am a retired academic (Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry) who has lived in Edgbaston
since 1970. For the 10 years prior to my retirement I was Head of Biochemistry and,
after a merger, of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham. I served on some of the
University’s more important committees such as the Strategy, Planning and Resources
Committee and Council. I had an successful research career in the medical sciences,
funded throughout by the major Research Councils, The Wellcome Trust and the British
Heart Foundation. I collaborated with several Deans of Medicine (most notably William
Doe) in developing and coordinating research strategy between the Medical School and the
Sciences. Recently I served as Treasurer of the Biochemical Society and am currently on
their Pension Trustee’s Committee. From 1997 until my retirement in 2002 I represented the
University as a Non-Executive Director on the Birmingham Women’s Hospital NHS Trust
Board and was the Lead on their first Clinical Governance Committee.

Outside of academia I was a founder member of Edgbaston Residents Association and
served as Secretary for about 4 years. I also represent Edgbaston on the Selly Oak/
Edgbaston Consultative Group that allows local input into and monitoring of the major
building developments currently ongoing in the area (principally the new hospital and the
Sainsbury complex). On a different tack I am involved with the Environment Agency (and a
few others) in trying to improve the biodiversity and water quality of the Barnt Green Bittel
reservoir system (to improve the fishing!).
