March 31, 2010
United Methodist Church
Rte 376 Poughkeepsie, NY
We had great plans for the February meeting; Mother Nature had her
own plans! Hopefully everyone has weathered through the snows of a few
weeks ago and the rains from this past weekend, and spring is truly on its way.
The March meeting will cover what had been planned for February, a
variety of topics, we‟re calling it “The Business End of Our Crafts”. We will
have a guest speaker from Citizens Bank (Melissa McGuire) to discuss their
small business opportunities.
An application for HVAG membership is attached at the end of
newsletter; if you know of someone interested in joining, please share the
application! Let‟s grow our organization!!
Membership renewals will be printed the month before renewal is due in
the Guild newsletter as a reminder to individuals. Each member up for
renewal will receive one e-mail reminder to renew. If the member doesn't
renew his/her name will be removed from the membership list and no longer
receive the Guild newsletter and will also be removed from the Members

HVAG presents "CREATING ART"
April 10th Saturday 10AM-4PM
Craft demonstration; all you need to do is sign up, the event is free. Fill out
the application (located at the end of the newsletter) and send it to:
25 Clover Hill Dr
Poughkeepsie, NY 12603
The $50 deposit will be refunded the day of the event. This event will be
published in the Poughkeepsie Journal as well as on the radio. Posters are up
in stores and the Poughkeepsie Plaza Mall. Over 100 invitations are going out
to local stores, organizations and schools. This is a great opportunity to let
people know where you sell your art, what shows you are doing and what
stores they can find your work.
Fall Colors Craft Show
As announced, the 2010 show is scheduled for November 6. An
application is attached, it will also be available on the website, at the meeting
and will be mailed to list of individuals who expressed interest. This is a guild
show and we strongly ask the members to support it! Our 2009 show had
over 900 attendees for a one day show, an excellent turn out. The majority of
vendors were very happy with their sales and plan to come back. We will
have room for more participants this year; we will be expanding beyond the
gym. Our reputation is growing; the show is being looked at as a „high end‟
show. Don‟t miss out!
As noted in the February Newsletter, its election time again. We will be
holding elections for the following positions: Treasurer, Vice President, and
two Members at Large. The descriptions for each position were in the
February newsletter. Following are the biographies for members currently
running for the various positions. Write-in ballots can still be done the night
of the elections.
Marguerite Cotter, candidate for the Vice-President position.
I was an art teacher for 31 years in the Spackenkill school district, serving on many
committees, as advisor to the student government, and as a union representative for the
teachers. At retirement I decided sitting home was not the thing to do and started my
ceramic business Civi's Creations. I enjoy both the creating process and the energy of
craft shows. I have been a member of the HVAG for 8 years serving on many
committees and as a member of the executive board.
Donna Boyd, candidate for the Treasurer‟s position
I have been a member of the guild since January of 2007 and a member-at-large
since March of 2008. I have learned many things through the guild and feel that the guild
has much to offer its members. I enjoy helping new members and crafts persons as they
explore new opportunities. While I am a jewelry designer at heart (currently on hiatus), I
have participated in many shows and gained a wealth of experience. I would love to see
all guild members be more involved in the group, for they all have much to give also.
Ann Sanicola, candidate for Member at Large
I have been a jewelry artist for most of my life, and have been working as an
artisan full time for about 5 years. Prior to that, I spent time working in the finance
industry, first for several financial services firms, Security Pacific, Bank of America, and
as a consultant for Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi, then for a beverage company, Snapple
Beverage Group, and a pharmaceutical company, Taro Pharmaceuticals. I have served on
the board of directors of a non-profit educational group, Afterschool Ventures in New
York City, which provided free and sliding scale fee services for needy families, where I
did fundraising as well. I was also heavily involved with the Educational Alliance
(another non-profit) in NYC. I feel that my business background and volunteer
experience would serve me well as a member at large of the HVAG. I have been a
member of the HVAG for two years. I am currently serving as the webmaster.
Carol Foley, candidate for Member at Large
Hello, my name is Carol Foley and although I only recently became a member of
Hudson Valley Artisans Guild, I am looking forward to meeting the other members and
sharing ideas and experiences. Not that I have many experiences yet, but I am gaining
more by the day! I am new to selling my craft – which is jewelry. I don‟t bead or wire
wrap, rather I prong set faceted semi-precious gemstones and cabochons in sterling silver.
I work full-time and attempt to do this in my spare time – as I am sure many others do.
Sue Lipp, candidate for Member at Large
I have been involved with the Artisan's Guild approximately 7 or 8 years and
have learned so much from the members. I would like to be able to give some of that
knowledge back to the Guild.
