                 Terms
• Resolution – controversial statement being
  debated.
• Affirmative- speaker (s) in support of the
  resolution.
• Negative – speakers (s) against the
  resolution.
• Burden of proof – the duty of proving the
  resolution true (always belongs to aff.).
• Moderator – runs the debate, keeps order
• Status quo – current state of affairs
• Constructive – speech in which speakers build
  their case in favor of or against the resolution
• Rebuttal – speech in which speakers refute and
  rebuild their case
• Cross-examination – questioning of the
  opposing side
• Subsequent speaker – member of the audience
  who volunteers to speak in favor of or against
  the resolution.

• Affirmative – 6 minute constructive speech
• Negative – 3 minute cross-examination
• Negative – 7 minute constructive speech
  (including refutation)
• Affirmative – 3 minute cross-examination
• Affirmative – 4 minute rebuttal speech
• Negative – 6 minute rebuttal and summary
• Affirmative – 3 minute rebuttal and summary

(and you shouldn’t have too much time left.)

1. Yield time to the chair. (Sit down and be
   done.
2. Yield time to questions. (Answer
   questions from the audience.)
   Moderator’s responsibilities.
• Appoint a timekeeper and make sure they know
  the signals.
• Read the resolution.
• Introduce the debaters.
• Keep order. Remind people of rules of decorum.
• Call on questions and subsequent speakers.
• Take the vote at the end of the debate.
• Pass out and count best speaker ballots.
• Announce results.
