LAB 6
(Due 3/05/08 at start of Lab)

Field Exercise                       Equipment instruction key:
                                     (Black = everyone, Blue =GeoExplorer3 Red= GeoXT or Juno ST)
(All coordinates in
 UTM/UPS 15T NAD83)

(Since we are sharing the Trimble units, also take a Garmin unit and practice collection
while you are waiting your turn)


Your lab “turn in” will be the six (6) features collected in one .ssf
file also called a”Rover” file.

Make sure you create/use your own “Rover” file and put your
initials or name in the comment field of each feature collect.
Outside
You should go outside (West door). Start the Trimble unit and obtain satellites.
Walk to the Fire Hydrant by the GYM

Collect a Point (at assigned location)
   Push DATA                                               Select Data from the drop down.
                                                           Select New File then Create.
   Create a New File       push ENTER                  This step creates a new “Rover File”
                                                            Set Antenna height - OK
   Select Point            push ENTER                   Select Point_generic (select Create)

   The unit starts beeping or                              The pen starts “writing”

                                                      Use keyboard to type in comment
   Push ENTER at the Comment:
                                                          (use the arrow keys and
   Type in you Name in the Comment Field                  ENTER, Close when done)

   After 60 positions push CLOSE
   At the New Feature Screen                                   After 60 positions

   Push CLOSE again                                            Select Close (to close Rover)

   Select YES to save your Rover File push ENTER

   Pass the Trimble unit to you Partner        (they will create a new “Rover” file.)

    Repeat Point Process

Collect a Line (at assigned location)

Push DATA                                      Select Data –Existing File

Open Existing File     push ENTER             Select you Rover File, Select Open
                                              Select Antenna, on drop down
                                              Select Collect Features

Select Line                     push ENTER    Select LineZ_generic

Push LOGII to pause the data collection            Select Pause

Push ENTER at Comment:                             Use keyboard to type in comment
                                                       (use the arrow keys and
Type in your Name in the Comment Field                 ENTER, Close when done)


Push LOGII or Pause to begin logging and walk the sidewalk; if the unit stops
beeping
(it has stopped data collection) STOP walking until it starts beeping again.

At the end of the Sidewalk push CLOSE                      At the end of the sidewalk
                                                           Select Okay
At the NEW FEATURE Screen
Push CLOSE again                                           Select Close

Select YES to save your Rover File           push ENTER

                                                                          Before turning logging on;

                                                                          Select OPTIONS and choose
                                                                          OFFSET. Select LEFT or
                                                                          RIGHT and DISTANCE.
                                                                          Then turn logging on and
                                                                          walk correct distance to GPS
                                                                          the curb of the parking lot.

Collect an Area (at assigned location)

Push DATA                                      Select Data –Existing File

Open Existing File     push ENTER             Select you Rover File, Select Open
                                              Select Antenna, on drop down
                                              Select Collect Features

Select Area                     push ENTER    Select Area_generic

Push LOGII to pause the data collection            Select Pause

Push ENTER at Comment:                             Use keyboard to type in comment
                                                       (use the arrow keys and
Type in your Name in the Comment Field                 ENTER, Close when done)


Push LOGII or Pause to begin logging and walk the Parking Lot; if the unit stops
beeping (it has stopped data collection) STOP walking until it starts beeping
again.

At the end of the Parking Lot push CLOSE                   At the end of the Parking Lot
At the NEW FEATURE Screen                                  Select Okay

Push CLOSE again                                           Select Close

Select YES to save your Rover File           push ENTER

Now choose your own locations to collect a point, a line and a
polygon.

Collect the data as above.

Pass the Trimble unit to you Partner


Back in the Classroom

Cable up your cradle (Start ActiveSync if not using GeoExplorer3)


Start Pathfinder Office


Create a Project on your Jump drive in Lab 6.

Use “Utilities” -- “Data Transfer” --->Connect-- Add Files
Select your “Rover File” - Transfer All

Pass the unit to your partner.

Open the transferred file if you wish and view it using the Map menu.


Submit the rover with your three features (fire hydrant/point, line/sidewalk and
polygon/parking lot ) as an attachment to the Web Vista assignment (Lab 6).


This means attach your .ssf file to the WebVista assignment.
