                                                                                                                    he San Francisco Conservatory of Music hosted an
                                                                                                                    Inaugural Concert Gala, celebrating the opening of a grand
                                                                                                                    Concert Hall in its new facilities in Civic Center, in late
                                                                                                            January. More than 300 guests enjoyed a glorious black-tie dinner,
                                                                                                            receptions in the school’s three-story atrium, and a full concert in
                                                                                                            the restored ballroom-turned-concert hall, making it an evening
                                                                                                            to remember. The performance represented years of planning
                                                                                                            and rehearsing—pieces by alumnus Aaron Jay Kernis and Steven
                                                                                                            Mackey were commissioned and premiered, and guest stars such
                                                                                                            as the Honorable Willie Brown and San Francisco Symphony
                                                                                                            conductor Michael Tilson Thomas performed with faculty, students,
                                                                                                            and alumni on stage. From the podium, MTT congratulated the
                                                                                                            Conservatory on “so many amazing projects, so brilliantly realized.”

   Celebrate New Beginnings
   A new state-of-the-art Conservatory in the heart of San Francisco’s cultural district deserves special attention, and so began a series of events
   showcasing the features of three beautiful new halls, and thanking the donors who made it all possible.




                                                                                               Chamber music and solo pieces rang in the new Recital Hall, featuring
                                                                                               special performances by notable alumni violinist Krista Bennion Feeny
                                                                                               and pianist Robin Sutherland, and faculty David Tanenbaum. Faculty
                                                                                               performed chamber music including a premiere by composer David
                                                                                               Conte, and shivers ran down spines when Pedro Betancourt and Alaine
                                                                                               Rodin sang a scene from La Bohème. The Atrium was stunning, bathed
                                                                                               in beautiful light and flowers for the post-concert reception, thanks to
                                                                                               event designer Robert Fountain.

    A fitting concert for the Osher Salon showcased the versatility of this
    intimate 100-seat hall. From Elinor Armer’s world premiere performed
    in surround-sound by percussionists in every corner, to a dramatic
    stair-case entry during an opera scene, the Salon brought guests and
    performers together in a personal experience. Dessert and champagne
    followed in the café level.
