                                              - Britain today –
The British capital is home to about 300,000 French *nationals. Some people are surprised that so many of
the French would want to live in London. The British often think of France as a lovely place to be, with nice
bread, inexpensive good wine, and clean hospitals. So, why move to the UK? First, it would be surprising if
there weren’t a lot of French people living in London considering that from Paris, the British capital is only
about 300 kilometres away. There’s even a direct train link under the Channel. Second, these French people
usually do not give up their nationality to become British. They are still French, only living in London because
that’s where they work. Also, in this city they can still smoke when they go out for a drink. Smoking is
*banned in French cafés, but Britain’s pubs have to wait until July. Whatever the reason for coming to
London, it’s nice to see that the British capital city is trying hard to make other Europeans, like the French, feel
welcome. As a matter of fact, London’s restaurants offer a wide variety of French dishes, perhaps to promote
British hospitality. But if Londoners really wanted to do something for Franco-British relations, they would
give the 2012 Olympics to Paris. The French wanted the Olympics. The British apparently can’t *afford the
Olympics so the government has to find the money to pay for them by raising local taxes.
