Overview

Blogs and wikis are two Web 2.0 tools that

     – Blogs function as online journals

     – Wikis are collections of searchable, linked Web
pages that users can create or edit collaboratively

The Structure of Web-based
Applications
Blogs and wikis both offer users a simple way
to publish content to the Web without the need
 to know HTML
HTML uses tags to instruct a Web browser
how to display a Web page
     – Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a complementary
technology that specifies fonts, colors, layout, and
       placement

The Structure of Web-based
Applications
Many Web applications use a three-tiered
structure that allows users to interact with the
 Web site
     – Presentation tier deals with presentation of
       information
     – Middle tier is responsible for processing user input
          • Also called the business logic tier
     – Database tier is responsible for retrieving
       requested information

A Database-Backed Web

Web 2.0 is often referred to as a read/write
 Web, or a database-backed Web
     – Web applications read from or write to a database

A Web server processes requests for Web
pages sent over the Internet from a Web client
     – Client-server model
