LANXESS GLASS FIBER




LANXESS is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of engineering ther-
moplastics. In addition to production plants for polymer base resins, mono-
mers, compounds and blends, LANXESS operates a glass fiber producti-
on facility in Antwerp (Belgium) with state-of-the-art manufacturing and
environmental protection technology. Research and development and tech-
nical service departments are located both at the production site and at our
headquarters in Germany.


The LANXESS Antwerp plant produces exclusively E-glass fibers. This
glass is defined by DIN 1259 as an aluminum borosilicate glass with an
alkali content of less than 2% by weight.


The use of glass fibers as reinforcement in thermoplastic polymers like
polyamides, polyesters and polypropylene yields materials with very attrac-
tive properties. Glass fiber-containing thermoplastic compounds show high
strength and stiffness while maintaining a high level of impact strength.
Combined with their low specific weight, ease of processing and tailor-
made properties, these materials find widespread use in automotive appli-
cations, household and electronic appliances.


Coating the glass fibers with a suitable composition called “size” is of vital
importance to the production, processing and end use of glass fibers. At
LANXESS, the development of sizing systems benefits not only from a
dedicated product development team, but also from the company’s wealth
of experience in polymer chemistry, as well as the valuable technical input
provided by other LANXESS business units.


Our range of glass fibers comprises a broad spectrum of grades which dif-
fer with respect to the type of size used (surface treatment), and their form
(diameter and strand length).


LANXESS glass fibers for the reinforcement of thermoplastics, polyuretha-
nes and thermosets are supplied in different forms for specific purposes.
The two basic forms are:




CHOPPED STRANDS (CS)

MILLED FIBERS (MF)

                                                                              CHOPPED STRANDS

                                                                              Directly after the application of size, the continuous glass fiber strand is
                                                                              cut into chopped strands. With different diameters and sizes the glass
                                                                              fibers are used mainly to reinforce thermoplastic and thermoset resins.
                                                                              Characteristics such as integrity, flowability, compatibility, etc. differ
                                                                              depending on the application, e.g. PA, PC, PP, PBT and PPS.




                                                  MILLED FIBERS




Chopped strands are subjected to an additional specific milling operati-
on to yield milled fibers. Through this treatment the fibers are reduced to
different lengths. Milled fibers are used mainly for the reinforcement of
thermoplastic resins, polyurethanes and some special applications like
brake linings.

TECHNOLOGY




HOW ARE GLASS FIBERS MANUFACTURED?

E-glass is fused from quartz sand, kaolin and other ingredients at
approximately 1,400 °C in a furnace lined with highly refractory brick,
refined for several days and then fed in liquid form to the bushings
through a system of channels known as the fore-hearth.


These bushings, made of a platinum alloy, are heated to such a tempe-
rature that the glass flows slowly out of the nozzle-like holes (orifices)
on the underside.




                                                                             By stretching the viscous monofilaments with the aid of a high speed
                                                                             chopper, they are reduced to the required diameter and at the same time
                                                                             drawn out to many times their original length. During this operation the
                                                                             threads are cooled by water and immediately coated with a dedicated
                                                                             sizing composition.
SIZES FOR GLASS FIBER

The mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics
depend heavily on the sizing system applied to the glass fiber surface.
The sizing system determines the compatibility, and thus the bonding bet-
ween the glass fiber and the polymer matrix. Because of their diverse
chemical nature, each different polymer matrix needs a specific sizing
system.
The size not only has an enormous positive impact on the mechanical
properties of the compound, but has a function to perform even during
the spinning process. Its lubricating action protects the wet strand
against friction and breakage. During the subsequent drying process, it
bonds together the individual monofilaments in the strand.
The size also has the function of imparting product properties like strand
integrity and free-flowing behavior, depending on the intended applicati-
on. It is also important for the automated handling of LANXESS glass         Glass fiber embedded in a polymer-matrix
fibers, e.g. in pneumatic conveyance systems or weighing hoppers.
