REGULATIONS FOR THE MENG HONOURS DEGREE PROGRAMMES IN CHEMICAL
ENGINEERING 2008/2009

These are the rules which govern the detailed operation of two of the Department’s
programmes. They must be read in conjunction with Regulation XX for a full
understanding to be obtained.

These Programme Regulations should be read in conjunction with Regulation XX and the
relevant Module Specifications. Notice of change will be given by the Department
responsible for the programme.



1.    STRUCTURE

1.    Administrative responsibility for the programme rests with the Department of Chemical
      Engineering.

2.    The programme leads to the Degree of MEng.

3.    The duration of the programme is either 8 semesters or 10 semesters if students
      undertake professional development in industry leading to the award of the Diploma in
      Industrial Studies which normally occurs between Parts B and C.

3.    ASSESSMENT

Criteria for Progression and Degree Award

Candidates will be allowed to progress from Part A to Part B if in addition to meeting the
provisions in Regulation XX in the Part A assessment they have achieved 100 credits, and
normally a minimum overall average of 55%.

Candidates will be allowed to progress from Part B to Part C if in addition to meeting the
provisions in Regulation XX in the Part B assessment they have achieved 100 credits, and
normally a minimum overall average for Part B of 55%.

Candidates will be allowed to progress from Part C to Part D if in addition to meeting the
provisions in Regulation XX in the Part C assessment they have achieved 100 credits, and a
minimum overall average for Part C of 50%.

In order to qualify for the award of the degree of MEng, candidates will be required in
addition to meeting the provisions in Regulation XX to achieve 100 credits in Part D.

Regulation XX states that Students shall be deemed to have passed a Part of a programme
if they have:
accumulated a minimum of 100 credits from the Part
and
fulfilled any additional requirements (as detailed in paragraph 27 hereof) for their specific
programme
and
(only for students commencing Part A or joining a cohort commencing Part A from 2004/5
onwards) achieved a module mark of at least 20% in all modules in the Part .

Any candidate who fails to qualify for the award of the MEng Honours Degree in Part D may,
at the discretion of the Examiners, be awarded a BEng in Chemical Engineering with a
classification based on the candidate’s performance in Parts B and C (using modular
weightings appropriate to the BEng programme) and provided that an Individual Design
Project is successfully completed.



Relative Weighting of Parts of the Programme for the purposes of Final Degree
Classification.

The candidates final degree classification will be determined on the basis of their
performance in degree level modules assessments in Parts B, C and D in accordance with
the scheme set out in Regulation XX. The average percentage marks of each Part will be
combined in the proportions Part B 20 : Part C 40 : Part D 40 to determine the final degree
classification.

Reassessment

Provision will be made for candidates who have the right of reassessment in Parts A, B and
C of the programme to undergo reassessment in the University’s special assessment period.
