“Christ beside me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ within me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me.”

                                              Mission Statement
St. Patrick of Heatherdowns is a vital part of the Catholic
Church, united in one faith, one baptism, committed to
the proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ in
word and sacrament. We worship together as the Body
of Christ, we minister to one another in the spirit of the
Gospel and we reach beyond ourselves to those in need
of our time, talent and treasure. We become the living
presence of God in love and service.

                                              FATHER DENNIS WALSH

I am sure that all of us are in the middle of our Lenten fast and sacrifices. Some have asked about the significance of
Lenten sacrifices and abstinence from meat on Fridays. The three pillars of Lent are fasting (including abstinence from
meat on Fridays), charity, and prayer. All three should be part of our Lenten practices. Someone once told me that it
seemed the practice of abstinence from meat on Fridays seemed meaningless. The thinking was that wouldn’t it be better
to do an act of kindness and charity toward someone. That would be great too, but it is still important that we not forget the
importance of fasting in our lives. Our small Lenten sacrifices help us to focus on the sacrifice and passion of Jesus Christ.

Some will recall the days when Catholics abstained from meat every Friday of the year. In fact, it is still part of our tradi-
tion to keep Friday as a day of prayer and penance to commemorate the passion of Jesus Christ. It is still recommended for
Catholics to abstain from meat on all Fridays. However, the Bishops have allowed that Catholics may substitute some
other form of penance.
Some have asked about the requirements for fasting and abstinence during Lent. Here are the guidelines:

      1) Abstinence on all the Fridays of Lent, and on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

No meat may be eaten on days of abstinence.
Catholics 14 years and older are bound to abstain from meat. Invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.

      2) Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Fasting means having only one full meal. Two smaller, meatless and penitential meals are permitted according to
one's needs, but they should not together equal the one full meal. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
Catholics from age 18 through age 59 are bound to fast. Again, invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt.
