  With Hitler's agreement, Furtwängler cancels his public activity during the winter season 1936/1937, wishing to spend this period in

  On 7 September, the Jewish1 pianist, Karl-Robert Kreiten (pupil of Claudio Arrau), was hanged by the Nazis. Hartmut Lange wrote a
theatrical piece on this episode called Requiem für Karl-Robert Kreiten, the première of which took place in 1987. The characters are
Kreiten and his mother, Furtwängler and Goebbels, two informers, a Gestapo agent and others.

uncle Karlrobert Kreiten was not Jewish, but a Dutch subject whose family had been Catholic for as long as records exist. Furtwänglers
deep friendship with the Kreiten family was well established, in fact I still have postcards and letters from him, especially to my
