National Certificate in Supervision of Youth Development Programmes
(Conservation Corps and Youth Service Corps)
Level 5
Credits 119-145
This qualification is expiring. The last date to meet the requirements is 28 February 2011.
Purpose
This qualification is for people who are supervising and leading youth training programmes
in Conservation Corps and Youth Service Corps. It is recognised by the Ministry of Youth
Affairs as a suitable qualification for people who work, or seek to work, in this field.
People who have an interest in youth work should also consider the National Certificate
and National Diploma in Youth Work [Refs: 0669 and 0670], as these are the professional
qualifications for youth work. This qualification does not qualify people in youth work, but
does include some unit standards from that domain.
The certificate recognises the wide range of skills that are needed to work successfully in
the field. It provides a pathway to further training and for specialisation in a variety of fields
– adult education and training, youth work, and especially outdoor recreation.
The compulsory section identifies the core skills required while the Education and Skills
Electives allows for flexibility through the provision of a range of options. This will allow
both leaders and staff of Conservation Corps and Youth Services programmes to identify a
qualification design that reflects their skill needs. The Recreation Electives allow
specialisation in at least one area of outdoor recreation.
The Recreation Electives are the same as the strands in the National Certificate in
Outdoor Recreation (Instruction) (Level 5) with strands in Adventure Based Learning, Bush
Craft, Caving, Kayaking, and Mountaineering [Ref: 0733]. Candidates may move in either
direction from one qualification to the other. People who have completed the National
Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Assistant Leadership) (Level 3) [Ref: 0449] may choose
to work towards either this qualification or the National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation
(Instruction) (Level 5).

Award of NZQF National Qualifications
Credit gained for a standard may be used only once to meet the requirements of this qualification.
