Improved economy and unusually hot summer supported consumption growth for most commercial beverage
categories. But in the case of beer, increased taxes and additional legislative pressure slowed down market
dynamics. Beer volumes remained fairly static in 2010 with marginal growth. However, beer performed better
than expected out-performing pessimistic forecasts.
Consumer confidence worsened however in the second half of the year, due to uncertainty about the results of
reforms announced in 2011.
In order to attract the attention of consumers, brewers launched new, innovative products and there was more
marketing activity than in 2009.
The government increased taxation and legislative pressure on the alcoholic drinks market during the year and
this continues to damage the alcohol industry. From 1 July 2010, excise duty was increased by 23.3% - quite
dramatic for the industry during these difficult times.
Beer consumption in public places was prohibited
From February beer consumption was prohibited in public places (on streets, in parks, health and education
institutions, public transportation - including international transport, closed sports facilities (excluding beer in
PET bottles), etc.
