Domestic demand continued to plummet to a historic minimum for last 20 years
The economic uncertainty, high unemployment and cold and rainy April, May and September dented domestic
beer consumption in 2010. The decline in demand for beer also illustrates the changing lifestyle of the Slovak
population. Lower alcoholic beers are becoming more popular because of more hectic lifestyle and lower
price. The younger generation are opting for other drinks which are now on offer and were not available a
decade ago. Consumption is also moving towards off-premise, again due to price difference and changing
lifestyle of the younger generation which is more health and sport conscious.
Imports are up, especially from Poland…
Brewing and packaging of Slovak brands is now often outsourced to other European nations where costs are
lower. Most Private Label volume is now imported and since the Pilsberg brewery closed down all its brands
are now brewed in Poland and imported to Slovakia. Other imports are largely dominated by Czech imports of
brands such as Budvar, Pilsner Urquell, Sta
