A negative year once again for the German beer market
2010 was again a bad year for the German beer market. Although the economic climate improved, consumer
confidence was slow to rebound and beer spend decreased both in retail outlets and in on-premise outlets.
Choice was driven by quality/price ratios and general volumes fell.
Most of the leading brewer groups lost volume again with only Oettinger and Veltins showing positive
development on a countable level. Brewers used price promotions to try to limit the negative effects of
consumers buying less. However, even the price competition failed to have a positive impact on market
volumes and both brands and brewers largely lost out. Those brewers who did gain volume did so by price
cutting or by increasing Private Label production.
The change of lifestyle to healthier living was also a negative driver for the beer market. Germans, especially
the younger groups, are moving away from beer to other bev
