									                      Johnny Carson

          “And now, heeeeeeeeeere’s Johnny!”

For 29 years at 11:30 PM on Channel 4, people heard that
from Ed McMahon. After taking over from Jack Paar,
Carson would host the Tonight Show from October of
1962 to May 22, 1992, when he retired. Other than
appearances on Late Show with David Letterman and The
Simpsons, he pretty much disappeared from the public after
that. Lots of information on Mr. C elsewhere, such as the

The King of Late Night had undergone heart surgery in
1999, and announced that he had emphysema not long
after, in 2002. After that, he spent most of his time on his
130-foot yacht, the Serengeti. He also met once a week to
play poker, with Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, Carl Reiner,
and Neil Simon. According to his nephew last year, he was
no longer able to play tennis, his favorite pastime, because
of his emphysema. Carson and his fourth wife, Alexis,
lived in Malibu.

On January 23, 2005, at 6:50 AM, he died at Cedars-Sinai
Medical Center, in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family.
Cause of death: respiratory failure, brought on by twenty
years of smoking. Upon hearing of his passing, David
Letterman issued this statement: "It is a sad day for his
family and for the country, he was the best -- a star and a
gentleman." Before Carson died, it was revealed that he
was sending jokes to Letterman for use in his monologues
on Late Show. On January 24th, on the Tonight Show, Jay
Leno marked his passing with Ed McMahon, Bob Newhart,
and Don Rickles reminiscing about Johnny. A week later,
Letterman did a monologue composed entirely of jokes sent
by Carson.

No funeral services were held, and Carson was cremated,
with his ashes going to his family.

I’m not going to get into the feud between Leno and
Letterman, look for that elsewhere. The same goes for the
Carson and Rivers incident.

Trivia: His son Rick was killed in an automobile accident
in 1991.

He was a close friend of Michael Landon. When Landon
made his final appearance on the Tonight Show, it got high
ratings. Landon died a few weeks later.

He started out as a magician when he was fourteen years

He was almost cast as Rob Petrie on the Dick van Dyke

He hosted 4,531 episodes of the Tonight Show.
 Hi Scott!

Love your website!

Thought I's send you some pics of Johnny's place in Malibu. They were taken in August 2002
while he was still alive and
chain-smoking behind the gates.

One shows a decent picture of the guard booth and one shows a picture of Johnny's BBQ Grill in
the driveway. What it's doing there I haven't a clue, but I know you like

shit like that (as do I)!

Take er easy,

Kyle Goodman
