For the past three years we have run a successful 5-day choral workshop under the
expert leadership of Malcolm Archer, and we shall be repeating it in 2011. We are
now seeking to recruit experienced singers who can expect to make good music in
convivial surroundings and in the process, become le Chœur de l’Académie du Festival

A basic level of sight-singing ability will be essential, and singers should try
to learn the music before the course begins. Copies of scores can be sent a
month in advance.

There will normally be two rehearsal periods each day at 3 rue de Moulin, la
Fontenelle. We have been invited to sing an evening mass at the church of Notre-
Dame-des-Grèves at Rocabey, St Malo and we shall perform in three concerts : at la
Fontenelle, the Church of Sainte-Croix, Saint Servan and the Abbaye de Caen. Vocal
coach Hilary Jones will be giving whole choir warm-up sessions each day and she will
“voice” the choir. Each participant is also entitled to a 20 minute individual lesson
with Hilary (included in the course fees), but singers may book additional half-hour
(£20/20€) or hour-long (£40/40€) sessions with her during the week.

Malcolm Archer, organist, conductor and composer, is renowned
as one of the foremost church musicians of his generation. From
2004 – 2007 he was Organist and Director of Music at St Paul’s
Cathedral, London, and prior to that, he was organist and Master
of Choristers at Wells Cathedral for eight years as well as being
the musical director of Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society.

He was educated at King Edward VII School, Lytham before
studying at the Royal College of Music (where he was an RCO
scholar) and Jesus College Cambridge where he was organ
scholar. He studied organ with Ralph Downes, Gillian Weir and
Nicolas Kynaston, and composition with Herbert Sumsion and
                 Alan Ridout.

He is currently in charge of the chapel music at Winchester
College, and he combines this work with an extensive recital and

Born in Llandudno, North Wales, Hilary studied singing, piano and
harp at Chethams School of Music, Manchester, and continued
her studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London
with Noelle Barker.

Hilary has taught the choral scholars and students of the
Universities of Oxford and Cambridge and young singers in the
Junior Department of the Guildhall School of Music. She has
devoted herself to the training of boys’ voices, teaching the
Cathedral Choristers of Westminster, Wells, Bristol, Winchester,
Salisbury, Winchester College, Carlisle, St Asaph, Rochester, Ely,
Manchester, Lincoln, Tewkesbury Abbey, Jesus College,
Cambridge, York Minster, Portsmouth, St. Mary’s, Warwick, St
George’s Chapel, Windsor, Leeds Catholic Cathedral, St Peter’s
Catholic Church, Winchester and the girl choristers of Wells,
Rochester, Norwich, St Mary’s, Warwick, Salisbury, Winchester,
Leeds and Carlisle. She is the only female who does this
specialised training with so many different choirs in England.

Hilary has worked with David Hill for over 17 years both at
Westminster and Winchester Cathedrals as well as assisting with
the voicing of the London Bach Choir of which he is director. She
was vocal coach to the City of Birmingham Symphony Youth
Chorus from 1995 – 2000 and since 1992, several choristers
trained by Hilary have won or been finalists in the BBC Radio 2,
Chorister of the Year. The 2003 and 2004 winners were all taught
by Hilary.

Her growing reputation has taken her on regular visits abroad, to
Rattvik in Sweden as vocal coach to the Boys Choir Festival
where she has worked alongside Sir David Willcocks and to
Bergen Cathedral in Norway where she has been assisting
Asbjorn Flam with the boys choir. Since 2000 Hilary has been
working with choirs in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina,
Cincinnati, and Akron, Ohio, Little Rock, Arkansas, and in New
York, as well as the RSCM course in 2005 in Raleigh.

Hilary is co-author of “Giving Voice”, a book on choir training and
conducting, published by Kevin Mayhew. She also contributed to
a Swedish book by Staffan Liljas, entitled “Gosskorboken”, about
choral training. Her latest publication project, “Girls’ Developing
Voices” was written for the RSCM’s “Voice for Life” scheme.

This will be Hilary’s second visit to la Fontenelle.

Brenda Dean is a retired teacher who has sung in choirs all her
life. A trained singer, she has set up choirs and directed choral
and stage productions in the UK and the Middle East.

She is a consultant with the Learning and Skills Network in
London, organising Citizenship training events throughout
England, and she is Events Coordinator for the Wingrave Singers
in Buckinghamshire. (www.bucksinfo.net/wingravesingers)

Brenda is President of the Association “Les Amis de Jean
Langlais” in la Fontenelle and, with the help of her French
committee, she has organised over 45 concerts in Brittany during
the Langlais International Festivals of 2005 – 2010, including
three very successful choral courses.

There are a number of different options for travelling to La Fontenelle. If you do come
by public transport, please note that there is NO public transport to La Fontenelle
itself - the only options are to hire a car or to book a taxi.

Please bear in mind that you will need transport whilst attending the course
to travel from your accommodation to the various rehearsal and concert

Fares are normally announced up to three months in advance, so to take advantage of
best prices for tickets (and to have a chance of a sharing arrangement for car hire), it
is suggested that anyone interested should identify their interest before 30th April,
2011 and plan to make a firm commitment within the following month as travel
details become available.

There a number of ferry options as well as the Eurotunnel. The table below lists the
possible routes and distances to La Fontenelle.

Charges for EUROTUNNEL are one way and vary depending on the time of day or
night, but they range between £44 and £144. The charge is per car with no limit on
the number of passengers (£30 for a dog!). Petrol costs about the same as in UK and
diesel is cheaper, so costs from Calais would be around £40. Total motorway tolls for
the journey would be about £24.

The EUROSTAR service from London provides an excellent link to France. TGV high
speed services and the changeover can be in Paris (requiring change of station) or
more simply in Lille (but at fewer times during the day). In both cases TGV services
go to Rennes and on to Dol and St Malo. Although the latter two are closer to La
Fontenelle, it takes longer to get there and arrangements still have to be made for the
onward journey. Again, the options are to hire a car or to book a taxi.

arrangements would need to be made for the onward journey - either by hiring
a car or by taxi.
