FEMINIST PERSPECTIVES AND BEYOND: The Art and Science of Eating Disorders Treatment The 19th Annual Renfrew Center Foundation Conference for Professionals NOVEMBER 12 - 15, 2009 PHILADELPHIA Overview In the past, the efforts of dedicated clinicians and researchers have contributed to significant progress in the treatment of eating disorders. Currently, a great deal is known about the qualitative aspects of treatment that promote recovery, as well as specific evidence based interventions that similarly tend to enhance healing. It’s now clear that successful treatment of eating disorders must encompass both art and science. The task ahead is perhaps less a search for major new breakthroughs and more a determined pursuit of refinement and integration. The 2009 Renfrew Center Foundation Conference is devoted to exploring how to make more effective use of what we already know. AGENDA Thursday, November 12, 2009 9:00 - 11:00 REGISTRATION & CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST TH 3 Treating Complex Traumatic Stress Disorders: An Evidence-Based Review LUNCH: 2:00 Christine A. Courtois, PhD 11:00 - 6:00 Thursday Full Day Workshops 10:00 - 5:00 LUNCH: 1:00 TH 1 The Therapist’s Toolbox Mary Bellofatto, MA, LMHC, NCC, CEDS, TEP Therapists often struggle with the complexity of working with eating disorder clients, to resolve resistance and move into recovery, or even to facilitate simple changes. This workshop provides therapists with a toolbox of techniques and strategies to enhance the therapeutic process. Particular emphasis is placed on psychodrama as a way to open new avenues of creativity and spontaneity for the eating disordered client. In addition, experiential and skill building techniques are described, which serve to motivate, implement and maintain emotional and behavioral change. Emphasis is placed on teaching clinicians to track with the client. Interactive, Experiential • All Levels TH 2 Wired for Connection: How Empathy, Shame 10:00 - 5:00 and Vulnerability Affect Helping and Healing LUNCH: 1:00 Brené Brown, PhD A constant barrage of social-cultural messages proclaims that being imperfect is synonymous with being inadequate. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth – imperfections are what connect us to each other and to our humanity. Vulnerabilities are not weaknesses, but powerful reminders to keep our hearts and minds open to the reality that everyone is deeply connected and more the same than different. This workshop explores the concepts of shame, empathy and vulnerability, and the role they play in perfectionism, addiction, eating disorders and isolation. Particular emphasis is placed on how to help clients find the courage to talk about their fears of being unworthy, unlovable and “not good enough” so they can move through shame to live more compassionate and connected lives. Traditional DSM diagnoses cannot capture the challenges presented by highly distressed clients who are emotionally dysregulated, shame-bound, dissociative, chronically self-destructive, multiply addicted and strongly resistant to treatment. Over the past 15 years, the term complex traumatic stress disorder has come to signify the role of repeated developmental and attachment trauma – ongoing and severe sexual, physical, and emotional abuse by a parent or guardian – in the origin of numerous physiological, personal/emotional, and relational problems. In this workshop, a comprehensive discussion of complex trauma and complex traumatic stress disorder is followed by a description of a multifaceted, integrated, step-by-step sequence to treat this condition, including stabilization, provision of a sense of safety, addressing and processing traumatic material, dealing with collateral problems such as addictions and eating disorders, consolidating treatment gains and defining and establishing “normal” life patterns. TH 5 Treatment of Exercise Issues in Eating Disorder Clients: A Mindful Approach LUNCH: 2:00 Kelly N. Pedrotty-Stump, MS, RYT, Rachel M. Calogero, PhD, Kimberly Wright Cover, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN, Peach Friedman, MFA, Anna Marie O’Melia, MS, MD and Justine Reel, PhD, NCC, CPIC 11:00 - 6:00 Didactic, Interactive • Intermediate TH 4 Beyond Talking: Using Therapeutic Eating Sessions, Coached Meals and Other Eating LUNCH: 2:00 Techniques in the Treatment of Eating Disorders Sondra Kronberg, MS, RD, CDN, Page Love, MS, RD, LD and Meg McLeroy, LMFT 11:00 - 6:00 Dysfunctional exercise is a known predictor of eating disorders onset and relapse, yet few clinical guidelines exist to treat exercise issues. This workshop offers an opportunity to experience and discuss effective ways to address exercise issues in eating disorders treatment and recovery. Mindful approaches to incorporating exercise into treatment are considered. The workshop begins by describing innovative methods for challenging a client’s relationship to exercise using an experiential format. By modeling an actual therapeutic exercise group, participants “get into their bodies” through body awareness activities, journaling, visualization, and meditation exercises. Experts from various disciplines and applied settings host a panel discussion in which panel members share case studies, research data, and practical guidelines for addressing exercise issues during eating disorder treatment. Interactive, Experiential • All Levels 6:00 - 7:00 Experiential, Didactic • All Levels 1 Incorporating shared eating experiences, eating related exercises and family coached meals into eating disorders treatment can provide important insights that are critical to recovery. The emptiness that results creates anxiety, depression and addictive disorders. Unable to find our relational center, we lose the freedom to live and love fully. This keynote presentation describes the specific gifts and challenges of the four major stages in the feminine lifecycle, and illustrates the significance of understanding the unique unfolding of relationality throughout the cycle. Doing so provides a window on psychospiritual development that enables therapists to engage emptiness at a deeper, more meaningful level. As a result, healing can proceed from an expanded and more enlightened psychological, biological and spiritual framework. FR 8 Reclaiming Inner Wisdom: Mindful Approaches to Changing Eating Behaviors Marjorie C. Feinson, PhD and Diane Wyshogrod, PhD This workshop presents a detailed description of an eight session course designed to help women with serious eating problems, including tools for initial assessment. Siegel, MD Initially, we learn to regulate internal states by way of how our caregivers SEE our internal worlds. In turn, we learn the essential skill of seeing the mind, of acquiring MINDSIGHT, through these collaborative and resonant connections with others. Examining a “triangle of well-being” through the lens of science helps us to find new clinical applications to a range of challenges including eating disorders. This keynote presentation explores the idea that integration – the linkage of differentiated areas of our lives – within our relationships and within our nervous system is at the heart of healing. Without integration we move toward chaos and/or rigidity; with integration, we live with flexibility and harmony. Various domains of integration can serve as a framework for promoting mental well-being in ourselves and in those in our care. POWER VINYASA YOGA Kelly N. Pedrotty-Stump, MS, RYT In this class, yoga poses are dynamically linked through the breath in a progressive and physically challenging sequence. About The Renfrew Centers The Renfrew Center was established in 1985 in Philadelphia as the first free-standing, residential treatment facility in the United States exclusively dedicated to the treatment of women with eating disorders. Today, The Renfrew Center has facilities in Philadelphia and Radnor, PA; Greater Ft. Lauderdale, FL; New York, NY; Ridgewood, NJ; Wilton, CT; Charlotte, NC; Nashville, TN; Dallas, TX and Bethesda, MD. The Renfrew Center now offers an Extended Care Program designed specifically for individuals stepping down from intensive treatment for an eating disorder. “Renfrew House,” a 16-bed, home-like facility located on the Philadelphia campus, provides program participants with the support and life skills necessary to transition back into everyday life. The Renfrew Center has helped more than 50,000 women with eating disorders and other behavioral health issues. The treatment philosophy emphasizes a respect for the unique psychology of women, the importance of a collaborative therapeutic relationship, and the belief that every woman needs to actively participate in her own recovery. If you or a loved one has an eating disorder, The Renfrew Center is the only treatment facility in the country with programming specifically geared toward observant Jewish women. All food is provided by Glatt Kosher vendors and religious practice is respected. The Renfrew Center emphasizes the importance of working within clients’ cultural-religious frameworks. Renfrew therapists are sensitive to the customs and practices of Orthodox Judaism. Through its programs, the Foundation aims to increase awareness of eating disorders as a public health issue and research the pathology and recovery patterns of people with eating disorders. The Foundation also seeks to educate professionals in the assessment, treatment and prevention of behavioral and emotional disorders by sponsoring an Annual Conference, as well as numerous seminars throughout the country.
