play. The C.I.F. Southern Seotion four A champions for a second. year in
a row, !mat had its star quarterback, John Soiarra, named for top-player honors by
members of All-Southern California Board of Football. Last year, Pat Haden and John
McKay were co-award winners off the title-winning Lancers. !mat won the title last
year. over Lakewood, 18-11, in a tie-breaking ending. This year the Lancers out-
scored Western High School in the Coliseum finale, 31-21. Dennis McLaughlin's squad
was 5-0 in league action during 1911, defeating Blair (26-0), Rosemead (21-14), and
Pasadena (10-0) on the w~ to the '71 crown. !mat is the first "AAAAtt repeater since
Loyola's title-winners of 1962-63. Amat stretched its win streak to 16 straight in
1971, 12 wins coming this season.
Sciarra, the 6-0, 175-pound director of coach Dennis McLaughlin's grid jug-
gernaut had no serious opposition for MVP honors. The talented QB, who scored over
100 points during the yea:r, had a typical game against Western in the finals. He
passed for three TDs, scored once on an II-yard keeper and returned a punt 72 yards
for another score. Western coach Jim Everett admitted, following the title game,
"that punt return for a touchdown was the play that did us in. It was really demor-
alizing."

Chester Lemon, coach Virgil Grant's ace defensive back for the league-champion
Fremont Pathfinders, was acclaimed Southern League Player of the Year as annual all-
league selections were released today by United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation.
At 6 feet and 185 pounds, Lemon was a devastating defender for the Pathfinders and
was one of four Fremont defensemen who helped their team to a perfect 5-0 loop sea-
 son.
Dorsey's Dons led the league in placing men on the two units •••• five on offense
and two on defense, with title-winning Fremont and third place finisher Manual Arts
landing six players each. Two players repeated off last year's first offensive team,
while one is back from the '70 defensive unit.
It was Fremont (5-0), Dorsey (4-1) and Manual Arts (3-2) leading the wa~r through
a tough Southern League race, with Los Angeles (2-3), Jefferson (1-4) and Washington
 (0-5) finishing among the also-rans.
Both Southern League playoff teams did well in the first round, as champion Fre-
mont disposed of Verdugo Hills 28-7 and Dorsey dumped No. Hollywood 30-6. In the
second round, however, Fremont was tripped by Monroe, 15-1;, as Carson caught
 Dorsey, 21-6.
All-league teams, released through United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation,
are picked through the cooperative effort of league coaches and United/Helms Board
members. Players named for honors receive special scroll awards, delivered to eaoh
schoal's coaoh for presentation to the honored athletes.
