Mesa Leadership Program Graduates 27th Class The May 8th graduation of Mesa Leadership’s Class 2009 at the Phoenix East/Mesa Hilton made it the 27th class to graduate from the Mesa Leadership, Training & Development Program since the first class graduated in 1982. Currently, over 600 people have completed this comprehensive nine-month program to enhance their community involvement in Mesa. All Mesa LTD classes typically brag that their class was the greatest and, of course, Class 2009’s twenty-five members enthusiastically state their class is the best. This class truly bonded as a team and completed a very successful class project at the House of Refuge in February. Visit Mesa Leadership’s web site (www.mesaltd.org) for project details and pictures. Every year, the Mesa LTD Committee strives to put together a better program than the previous year and continues to update the curriculum topics to reflect Mesa’s current environment. Because of the outstanding and ongoing support of Mesa businesses, government and citizens, Mesa LTD is able to acquire exceptional locations and speakers for its monthly program agendas. The 2009-10 Mesa LTD Committee structure became official on June 1st and this dynamic team has already had a Saturday Retreat to strategically plan and set goals for the upcoming year. Membership in Class 2010 is almost finalized and the Curriculum Co-Chairs are generating the August orientation agenda. A week before the class, a one-half day ice breaker get-together will occur to allow class members to get acquainted prior to starting the official classes. Ask yourself what your goals are in participating in networking meetings so that you will pick groups that will help you get what you are looking for. Some meetings are based more on learning, making contacts, and/or volunteering rather than on strictly making business connections. Ask open-ended questions in networking conversations. This means questions that ask who, what, where, when, and how as opposed to those that can be answered with a simple yes or no. This form of questioning opens up the discussion and shows listeners that you are interested in them. Answer this month’s question and get one advertising insert or business card ad for 3 months. I really don’t take much stock in them, but I am always interested in seeing where my city is ranked. Well a new “best of” list was just released in June by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine: Best Cities: It’s All About Jobs The magazine looked at 361 U.S. metropolitan areas and evaluated them for their growth potential. They looked not just at the overall number of jobs, but also at the quality of those positions and the ability of cities to hold on to them in this soft economy. They focused on places that have stable employment plus the talent to create new, wellpaying positions. A robust job market makes these cities safe havens during the recession and will give them a head start toward growth when the recovery takes off. In looking at 361 metro areas they included big and small metro areas because the suburbs and surrounding communities contribute to job stability and the big cities I L o i s Ya t e s don’t have a monopoly on vitality. What a difference a year makes. Last summer, the energy and finance sectors of the economy seemed to be thriving, and manufacturing was going strong. But today, many cities are relying on government programs, universities and stalwart industries, such as health care, to bolster employment in a weak economy. Although downturns are felt by everyone, the magazine’s research showed that the impact is less severe for those in the creative class -- people who are paid to think. These are people who work in professional occupations, such as science, engineering, architecture and education. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine selected the following ten cities as having the most stable employment as well as the most new career opportunities. The Phoenix- Mesa-Scottsdale metro area is not on the list, but this is probably a list that we should aspire to be on in the future!. Since joining the online social site back in January, VisitMesa is now boasting more than 2,200 followers – all of which have elected to receive Mesa’s messages via the online platform. In fact, VisitMesa has been getting noticed on Twitter as fellow tweeters recognize the bureau’s efforts in this new social realm. Just recently, VisitMesa was ranked in the top 20 using Twitter for destination promotion tracked by Go See Tell Network, the Oregon based internet company specializing in destination marketing. TCF stands for The Customer First today but is the same bank better known as Twin City Federal that originated in Minnesota in 1923. We expanded into Arizona in 2006 and are continually growing here as we strive to be the most convenient bank in Arizona. We set out to accomplish this by offering totally free checking to all personal and business customers, competitive savings and lending rates, and being open extended hours, 7 days a week! Every year the Chamber receives hundred of requests for relocation packets from people planning to relocate to the Mesa area. In the past we have filled these requests by simply sending the Chamber directory with our community and membership information. The feedback we generally receive is that what we are providing isn’t specific enough information. They are looking for realtors to assist with housing, new banks to open accounts with, new healthcare providers for their families, a place to take their car for repairs, contact information on utilities for their homes. If you would like for us to include specific information on your company in addition to our directory we can insert your flyer or advertisement as a part of the packet. To include your company information in our relocation packet we would need 500 of your flyers or brochures. This direct marketing opportunity is available to you for an annual fee of $275. To get your company information before these potential customers and clients first, please contact Leigh White at lwhite@mesachamber. org or call her at 480.969.1307 x 11. Had Brian Vivian of Thompson’s Auto Repair & Towing been there you might have seen him collecting the Evaluation Drawing winnings, sponsored by JacksonWhite Attorneys. Sadly he wasn’t, so half of the Evaluation winnings went to George Pappas, from Bedmart, the other half rolls over for July. Please take note as we give our thanks to the many businesses that contribute monthly through prize sponsorships, tabletops, and door prizes and add to the continued success of Good Morning East Valley. ® C H E C K O U T T H E C H A M B E R W E B S I T E T O R E G I S T E R F O R U P C O M I N G E V E N T S -9- Experience vs. Age The Great Job Search Debate The debate on who has the bigger advantage in the job market among recent college graduates and mature workers has been going on for decades. But, due to the struggling economy, the tension among these workers has increased as both demographics strain to find work. According to a recent survey by Movin’ On Up, the Express Job Blog, 70% of respondents believe that mature workers are having a harder time in the current job market compared to recent graduates. But are they? Here are the facts to help you decide. Victims of Discrimination? Part of the tension stems from aggravated mature workers who believe they’re victims of discrimination. According to AARP, it takes 25 weeks for a mature worker to land a job, compared to 18.7 weeks it takes for a younger worker. In fact, age-related discrimination claims for mature workers jumped by 29% in 2008, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Frustrated younger workers are feeling discriminated against, too, largely due to their lack of experience. For the first time since 2001, when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center, college graduates are entering a job market that’s not ready to provide them with the experience they need. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, companies are expected to hire 22% less from the college class of 2009 than in 2008 – feeding the frenzy of panicked graduates entering the job market. Unemployment Statistics According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of employed workers ages 16 – 24 has fallen by 2 million over the last two years. Currently, 18.3 million people in this age bracket are employed. The number of Americans 65 and older who are still in the workforce today has risen by 700,000 to total 6 million employed. Even though mature workers who have reached retirement age and are staying in the workforce has risen, 3.8 million workers 45 and older were unemployed in February 2009, up from 2 million when the recession began 15 months ago. So, depending on the demographic, arguments of why one can’t find a job and the advantages others have are endless. But, the truth is that both groups have strengths and weaknesses in their repertoire that can directly impact their job search and performance. The Competition Increases As the number of job openings continues to decline, down 50% from December 2007 when the recession began, the number of job seekers continues to increase. That means nearly five people are competing for the same job, up from the 2-to-1 ratio from a little more than a year ago. So what do job seekers, college grads and mature workers alike, need to do to land a job these days? First, they need to realize that employers, like the little girl in the children’s story Goldilocks and the Three Bears, want someone who is “just right” for the position, which means it really doesn’t matter if you’re a college graduate or a mature worker. What you need to focus on is becoming the right fit. Job seekers need to be more creative in their job search. Simply visiting the career counselor on campus to find a job or expecting experience alone to get in the door is no longer enough. Drafting résumés and cover letters to specifically mirror preferences and job postings on company websites, researching a company’s history and background, and setting yourself apart through persistence, knowledge and dedication is what will separate you from the four other candidates who are competing with you for every job. The debate on which age group has the bigger advantage will persist, but research shows that the downturn in the economy is affecting everyone in the job market – regardless of age. Job seekers must search out careers with companies that match their skills and needs, offer employers something they can’t live without, and demonstrate that you can blend with the culture of the company. So, you can continue to debate on who has it worse, or you can get out there and compete.
