              PN IMMUNISATION PROGRAM EVALUATION
                                              THURSDAY April 10th
The Nursing in General Practice program at GP NSW has partnered with Dr Liz Halcomb from the University of Western
                   2008
Sydney (UWS) to develop a research project which aims to explore the correlation between RNs completing the
Immunisation Course for Registered Nurses course through The College of Nursing, and the immunisation rates of their
practice. The research will also explore the demographic and professional characteristics of course participants, their
knowledge and attitudes toward immunisation and the impact of the course on their clinical practice.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that general practice nurses who have completed the Immunisation for Registered Nurses
course have a higher practice immunisation rate than those who have not completed the course.
The NiGP program has purchased 50 places from The College of Nursing. These places will be specifically for PNs from
practices with an immunisation rate of less than 90%. PNs who accept a funded position will be expected to participate
in the study. This will include a pre and post course survey, and agreement to undertake any extra follow up during or
after the course via mail, email or phone call. For the study to work to its best potential, the project team need
commitment from both the General Practice Network/Division and the PNs to participate in the study.
The research is currently undergoing ethics approval through UWS. The NiGP team will keep Divisions up to date with
the research study’s progress. For those nurses already on the ‘waiting list’ GP NSW will ensure they get a place in the
course.
               BREAKTHROUGH FOR PRACTICE NURSES
Article courtesy of NSW Nurses Association, The Lamp, March 2009.

The NSW Nurses Association (NSWNA) and the Australian Medical Association (NSW) have begun a landmark process
to achieve fair pay and conditions for nurses within General Practice and Specialist Practice settings.
NSWNA General Secretary Brett Holmes and the President of the NSW branch of the AMA, Dr Brian Morton, have
signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which will officially set the process in motion.
The MOU recognises the important role of Practice Nurses in enhancing the quality and scope of primary health care
services in NSW. The document is timely due to the likely success of the NSWNA's case for a safety net occupational
award for all nurses, irrespective of workplace, which is currently before the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.
If successful, this national award will replace the current State award for non-hospital-based nurses in 2010.
                                                                                                              2

NATIONAL PN CONFERENCE TAKES A NEW DIRECTION
Courtesy of RCNA Nursing Review, January 2009.

After six successful years hosting the National General Practice Nurse Conference, the Royal College of
Nursing, Australia (RCNA) has announced a new approach for 2009. Recent years have reflected a
significant growth in general practice nursing research, changing scopes of nursing practice in response to
population health needs, and an increased recognition of the role of general practice nurses. Having
observed the trends and development of general practice nursing, and furthermore the government's
commitment to primary health care, RCNA recognises the opportunity for nursing to influence potential
developments and the nursing profession's role in the delivery of primary health care.

The RCNA 2009 conference will take a broader perspective and focus on primary health care nursing. The
aim of the conference will be to explore opportunities for the greater integration of a range of nursing
services delivering primary health care such as practice nurses, school nurses, community health nurses,
maternal and child health nurses, to name but a few, and the integration of nursing services with broader
health services. RCNA looks forward to nurses working in primary health care to join them in Adelaide in
November 2009.
