GEI CONVERSATION PARTNERS PROGRAM
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the Conversation Partner Program?
GEI students and volunteers are paired and meet weekly for one hour to talk. This program is a free opportunity for
GEI students to practice their English conversation skills and meet people from the community. Volunteers can
learn something about the student’s culture, meet someone new, and help someone practice his/her conversation
When does the program begin and end?
Conversation partners generally begin the third week of the fall and spring semesters. The commitment is only for
one academic semester (four months), although partners may continue to meet when the semester is over.
I'm very busy, what times are available and where do we meet?
Conversation partners meet on the campus of JCCC: in the cafeteria, lounge areas, etc. Meeting times vary between
partners. Partners are matched depending on what times they are available, so the hours are flexible. If you need to
reschedule your time, simply contact your partner in order to meet at another convenient time. A partner who does
not consistently show up for conversation will be dropped from the program.
How many other people are in each group?
Normally, the groups will consist of one GEI student and one volunteer. However, at times you may be assigned to
a group with more than one person.
Is this the same as English tutoring?
No. The students are not to ask volunteers for help with lessons, homework, etc.
What other things do I have to do with my partner?
Nothing. Speaking English for an hour per week during the semester is the only requirement. In some cases,
friendships are formed over time and partners may want to do fun things outside of this time. Some typical
activities include eating dinner, celebrating a holiday, going to social and cultural events, etc.
Who are GEI students and can volunteers choose where their partner comes from?
The students attend the Global English Institute at Johnson County Community College and may or may not be
from different countries. Their goal is usually to improve their English proficiency in order to study at a U.S.
college or university. Although volunteers may suggest preferences for people from certain countries or who speak
a specific language, we cannot guarantee these preferences. We match partners based upon need and availability.
Can we speak in the GEI student’s native language?
The initial hour is time for the students to practice English and not speak in their native language. If both the
student and volunteer agree, they can speak in the student’s native language after the hour is over.
Can GEI students help with child care, housework, etc., with or without pay?
Absolutely not for visa students as this is illegal!
How do I sign up?
