July 2009 doc.: IEEE 802.11-09/0763r2

                     TVWS Issues (Updated)
 • Two use case documents presented to 802.19 depict how 802.11 would
      behave in TVWS
 • Document 19-09/26 has been updated to revision 4 to address feedback
      from 802.11
       – https://mentor.ieee.org/802.19/dcn/09/19-09-0026-04-tvws-whitespace-
         coexistence-use-cases.doc
       – Section 4 Coexistence Matrix has been modified such that it presents a fair and
balanced comparison between different technologies that may be used in the
         TVWS
 • No recent changes to 19-09/31
       – https://mentor.ieee.org/802.19/dcn/09/19-09-0031-02-tvws-tvws-coexistence-use-
         cases-user-experience.doc
       – misrepresents 802.11 and should not be considered as an 802.19 position
       – makes claims about how 802.11 devices will behave in the TVWS bands even
though 802.11 does not specify operation in this band
       – There are numerous examples of band specific modifications to 802.11, so
assumptions based on basic 802.11 operation in an ISM band from 1999 are
         unfounded
       – 802.16h/802.11y simulations demonstrated good coexistence

Submission Slide 7 Eldad Perahia (Intel)

                           802.19 PAR

 • 802.19 Coexistence Technical Advisory Group started in 2002
 • Similar to 802.18, neither TAG had a PAR at that point in time
 • In 2006, a PAR was approved for 802.19 specifically to create a
Recommended Practice for “Methods for assessing coexistence of
   wireless networks”
 • There has been little interest in contributing to this project
 • Consideration is being given to rescind the PAR
 • If this occurs, 802.19 will still continue to operate as normal in its
   capacity as coexistence advisory
