Operation/Maintenance

AVERY DENNISON Dry Ink System
The AVERY DENNISON Dry Ink System was developed by AVERY DENNISON
Corporation to give the garment manufacturer the unique ability to print quality
                              colorfast labels in-plant.
The AVERY DENNISON Machine using AVERY DENNISON Dry Ink and
AVERY DENNISON Tapes will print instant dry labels ready to be sewn into
garments. The label material is fed intermittently into the machine from a roll. Each
time the tape stops, the dry ink is transferred using heat and pressure to the label tape.
The labels can then either be cut off and stacked or rewound into rolls for subsequent
                              operations.
The machine incorporates the following features for the ease of operation and to
                              improve the quality of print:
                                  1. New DC motor unwind to improve label tape tensioning
                                  2. Easily adjustable label tape guides
                                  3. Plexiglas front cover for better visibility of the dry ink waste rewind
                                  4. Open dry ink through the dry ink rolls can be quickly dropped into the
trough, which gives the roll the proper tension from start to finish without
                                       adjustment.
                                  5. Two-speed drive, this allows the operator to slow the machine down for
better ink transfer on larger images.
                                  6. 600 watts of heat in each printing head
                                  7. Transistorized pyrometer for better heat control
                                  8. Rubber auxiliary feed roll which improves registration into the knife
                                  9. Heavy duty cutoff knife
                                  10. Stacker equipped with static eliminator.

                              Optional Accessories
                                  1. Motorized rewind which does not affect the feed register
                                  2. Type Chases:
                                            a. For 1/16” etchings

Safety Issues / Warnings

Cautions
This printer uses high temperatures in the printing area that can cause burns to the
bare skin. It also has some pinch points. All of these areas have been well guarded
with electrical interlocks. It is recommended that the operator wears gloves when
working with the hot chases and that the safety features of the machine are never
                              altered.

Unwind / Registration Sensor
The AVERY DENNISON Model 5300EE Electric Eye machine is equipped with a
new powered unwind. The unwind is packaged separately and will need to be
installed at the location where the printer is being installed. It is not recommended to
install the unwind before locating the printer. The weight and size of the printer
makes it difficult to handle the printer with it installed and it is difficult to move the
                               system through narrow door openings.
The unwind mounts with two ¼-20 x 1 ¼” long screws from the inside of the left up-
right frame. There is also an “L” bracket to support the weave roller mount plate.
See drawing below - Figure 1.
There are two electrical connections required. The first is for the Stock Out Micro
Switch and the other is for the Dancer Arm.

Setting the Print Head Temperature

Figure 3 Setting the Print head Temperature
This control is manufactured to perform many functions, but on your hot stamp
machine, its only purpose is to control the print head temperature. The following is
an explanation of the front panel and function keys necessary to program for your
                               operation:
                                    1. The PV/SV key is used to alternate the two displays.
                                    2. Is the PV lamp, showing that the display is indicating the PV temperature?
NOTE: The PV temperature is the actual print head temperature.
                                    3. Is the SV lamp? It would be set at the desired temperature for the print
                                         head.
                                    4. Is a green indicator lamp showing that the print head is heating? It will
begin to blink when the PV temperature comes close to the SV temperature.
                                    5. Is the display that indicates the print head temperature in the PV mode?
                                    6. Down key will scroll any digit flashing downward.
                                    7. These keys are used to pulse the digit above them higher. The first pulse
will start the digit flashing and the second pulse will change it one number
                                         for each pulse.
Upon initial start-up in the morning, the pyrometer will indicate the PV temperature
until the PV/SV key is pushed. The display will then change to the SV temperature
                               setting.
To set the temperature, push the PV/SV key (1) until the SV lamp (3) is lit. Then
press the arrow key under the digit you wish to change. The digit will begin to flash.
Keep pressing the arrow key until the digit shows. Each press of the key will
advance it one count. Repeat this process for each digit you wish to change. When
all digits are set to the desired value, press the Ent. (8) Key.
The SEL key is only used to program the counter for other applications. Do not use
it. Should you accidentally press it, the display will show letters, which are different
functions of the control. Should this happen, do not press DATA key. Turning the
heat off and back on will correct the problem.

Setting up to print
                               Loading the supply roll:
A DC motor that automatically sets the roll tension for proper tracking - controls the
supply roll tension. As the dancer arm lifts, the motor will activate and advance
material from the supply roll. When the supply roll has been used up there is a micro
switches that will trigger and stop the printer.
The supply roll of material must be on a 3” or 4 “ inside diameter core with a ¼” wall
thickness. There is an outer sleeve that may be inserted over the 3” hub to accept the
4” core. There are two setscrews that will lock the adapter in place. Place the supply
roll on the arbor and push it back until it contacts the back disc. Insert the “L” handle
into the half moon slot and rotate in 180° to lock the core to the hub. (See threading

Preparing the Lower Bed

Figure 4 – Print Impression Bed
Place a new plastic impression pad (Figure 4) on the lower printing beds to provide a
smooth, uniform printing surface. Place the lower bed into the machine. Be sure the
bed is pushed all the way into that it drops in behind the retaining screw.
Both of these lower platens are equipped with a changeable impression pad. This
pad should be examined daily for dents or build-up of ink.
Pressure in the print station may be increased or decreased with the knob located just
below the dry ink tray on the front of the machine. Turning the knob clockwise will
increase the pressure while counter clockwise will decrease the printing pressure.
Remember the pressure should be decreased if the impression pads are changed.
There is a lock knob located to the right of the impression adjust knob.
The lower platen has a self-adhesive pad, which can be changed by the operator.
Since this is what backs up the tape during the print impression, it must be kept free
of ink build-up and dents. The platen can be removed by inserting the screw from the
tool kit into the tapped hole and lifting up and out.
When changing to a new impression pad, care should be taken to remove all of the
old adhesive from the steel bed.

Setting up for Dry Ink Printing
Slide the dry ink tray into the machine making sure that it is all the way in. Drop the
rolls into the trough and thread according to the threading diagram. Be sure the dry
ink goes under the stripping wire directly behind the printing bed. Take the dry ink
through the feed rolls and hook up on to the rewind core. Note: Install an ink core
on the rewind arbor to make removal of the waste ink easier. Slide the plastic dry ink
guides against the edges of the dry ink to align it with the printing plate. Dry ink feed
lengths are set with the adjustments under the center door. There is an adjustment for
the left hand dry ink and an adjustment for the right hand dry ink. The adjustments
are made by loosening the nut on the T-slot bolt turning the adjustment with the
thumbscrew until the indicator is set to the desired length. Retighten the nut on the
                              T-slot bolt.

Setting the Stacker
Loosen the lock screw on the back stacker and move the stacker in or out until the
backside misses the back edge of the label. Lock the stacker in place by tightening
the lock screw. Now move the outside plate of the stacker until it misses the outside
edge of the label and lock with the two locking screws. Before locking the outside
plate, the proper stacker platform, must be inserted. Plastic adapters, 1 and 1-5/8
inches, are supplied to vary the width of the ½ inch platform on the stacker. At this
point the machine must be cycled several times to make sure all the tapes are
threaded properly and the label goes into the stacker properly.
Note: The machine will not start if the Plexiglas guards, and the metal door are not
                                     closed.

Installation of Printing Plates
Screw the type chase handle into the type chase, and loosen the two side retaining
screws. Pull the chase out of the machine and place bottom side up on a flat table.
Install the printing plate within the two plate clamps. The plate has a center mark
that is used to line up the colors for two-color printing.
Note: AVERY DENNISON Corp. has three sizes of etched plates: a 1-1/4 inch plate
which requires the plate clamps to be on the inside of the chase; a 2 inch wide
plate which requires the operator to move the clamps to the outside of the
printing chase and the AVERY DENNISON 5300 which requires 3-1/8 inch
                                     plates.

                               Figure 5 – Two-Color Printing Plate Alignment
To set the plate for two-color printing, lay both plate chases flat on the table and set
the printing plates within the clamps (Figure 5). Measure from center mark of one
plate to the center mark of the second plate. This measurement should equal a
multiple of the desired finished label size minus 5/8 inch. For example, if a 2-1/2
inch label is to be printed, the two printing plates must be set 5 inches apart to the
center mark, minus 5/8 inch or 4-3/8 inch. This setting will give a very close
registration for the first label impression. Final registration adjustments will be
discussed below. The chases are now ready to be put back into the machine. Install
the chases in the reverse order which they where removed, and ensure that the chases
are placed in the same distance into the machine.
After locking the chases up, the heat may be turned on. It takes about eight minutes
for the print heads to heat up to operating temperature. The recommended beginning
                               temperature is 275°F.
                               CAUTION
Do not start the machine with the impression eccentric arrow pointing up. Starting
the machine on full impression will damage the printing plates. The arrow is located
on the left side of the printer near the bottom front of the printer.
After the chases have reached operating temperature, start the machine and let it run.
Slowly increase the impression by turning the knob on the lower front of the
machine. Turn the knob clockwise until the print appears on the label tape. An
indicator arrow on the left-hand end of the machine shows the amount of impression.
Printing heads have been factory leveled to give an even impression over the whole
                               label.
At this point, check the dry ink. If the image of the plate is indented in the dry ink,
but the ink has not transferred to the label tape, increase the chase operating
temperature. If the dry ink is stretching out of shape, or the plate is melting holes in
the dry ink, lower the chase operating temperature.
If two-color printing is required, observe the registration of the two colors. If the

colors are out of registration, one of the printing plate chases must be removed and
the printing plate repositioned on the chase to correct the registration. Once the
printed colors are in registration, set the knife so that the cut-off is in registration. To
set, loosen the lower lock screw and move the knife and stacker right or left by tuning
the hand wheel on the right-hand end of the machine to cut off the label in the proper
place. One turn of the hand wheel equals 1//16 inches. Ones it is set, retighten the
                                  two lock screws.
If the labels are to be rewound, the knife must be disconnected. The knife link is
quickly disconnected by sliding the spring-clip off the ball end stud. The rewind is a
separate option that is positioned to the right of the printer on the bench.

Machine Adjustments

Two Speed Drive
The machine is equipped with a two-speed drive. Top speed prints 148 labels per
minute and low speed about 125 labels per minute. The knob to change speeds is
located on the left hand end of the machine behind the unwind reel mounting bar.
When the knob is pushed in, the machine is in fast speed mode and when it is pulled
out the machine is in low speed mode. The machine is shipped with the speed set for
low range. To change the machine to the high range - turn the machine off, loosen
the lock collar on the shifting rod shaft – then slowly turn the hand wheel on the
motor and at the same time push the speed change knob in. If the printing head is
heated up do not turn the hand wheel so far that the machine goes on impression or
the dry ink will be melted. To change the machine from fast to slow, reverse the
above procedure. Re-lock the collar to keep the shifting rod from moving out of
position. Zetex patches must be run at the slow speed only. Labels may wash out in
                                  the high-speed setting.
                                  CAUTION
There is no neutral point in the shift knob. Be sure that the knob moves all the way
to avoid locking the machine in two speeds at once. Do not try to change speed with
                                  machine running.

Setting the Printing Head
The amount of impression on the printing head is changed with the knob, on the front of the machine. This
knob is secured by a lock screw. An indicating arrow, which shows the amount of impression on the
printing heads, is on the left hand end of the machine. When he arrow points directly down, the pressure is
at a minimum, When the arrow points directly up, the pressure is at a maximum. To set up a label, the
arrow should always be pointing down. This gives minimum pressure to start with.

Leveling the Printing Head
Although the printing head is factory leveled, it may require an occasional
                           adjustment.
Note: Do not level the head unless the printing shows a light spot in the same
area with two different printing plates and impression pads.

Figure 6 – Heater Platen Assembly
To re-level the head, proceed as follows:
                               A. Move the impression indicator arrow toward lowest position.
                               B. Install new printing pads on bed.
                               C. Install new printing plates (the larger the image on the plate the easier it is to
level the bed). If two-color labels are being printed, be sure to change the
pads and plates in both printing stations.
                               D. With the label, tapes and dry ink threaded for a normal run, start the
machine and slowly increase the impression with the adjustment knob until a
print transfer occurs in any one spot.
                               E. Stop the machine and loosen the tie screw over the area where the first ink
transfer occurs. Loosen the socket cap screw, hex lock nut, and back off the
jackscrew slightly. Restart the machine and slowly increase the impression
again until ink transfers to the label tape. If there is only a slight light spot,
stop the machine, loosen the cap screw and lock nut, and increase the
pressure over the light area with the jackscrew. By alternating these two
adjustments very carefully, the printing head can be precisely set to the bed
                                  in a very short time.

Adjustment of the Knife
If the knife fails to cut, loosen the two cap screws holding the lower knife, move to
the right and retighten the cap screws. The end toward the operator should be set
tighter to the top knife that the other end to improve the shear action. The lower
knife has two cutting edges and can be turned over when one side becomes dull.

Feed System

Feed Adjustment
                              Overview:
The Feed Adjustment located under the center door has been relocated to the center
position and the right foil feed has been moved to the right position. The printer is
capable of running both Pre-printed and Blank Zetex materials. There is a toggle
switch located on the right-hand side of the printer labeled “Blank and Pre-print”.
With the switch to the forward position - the system will run blank Zetex material and
perform like a standard 5300 printer. With the switch set to the back position - the
system will trigger on a pre-printed mark on the web by using the multi - color
contrast sensor located on the unwind assembly.
The clutch drive system for pre-printed material is triggered from the sensor and the
feed length. The feed length must be set 1/8” longer than the desired patch length.
This will allow the material to feed until the sensor triggers the clutch and releases
the feed. Setting the over feed greater than 1/8” will reduce the registration
capability. The 5300 clutch system will adjust to any increment up to the tested 4”
                              feed.
NOTE: The Contrast Sensor is used to register the pre-print to the hot stamp imprint
station. This must be in registration before attempting to adjust the knife.
The knife is an independent adjustment that must be made after the imprint
                                    has been set.
With the power on, and the printer threaded with tape and ink, set the toggle switch
to the “Blank” setting. Open the feed/ink adjustment cover and loosen the center
lock nut with a 17/64” wrench. Turn the knob Clockwise to shorten the feed and
counterclockwise to lengthen the feed. Use the scale on the bracket to adjust to the
                              approximate feed length desired.
                                                                                         CENTER
                                                                                         LOCK NUT

Run the printer and measure the feed length of the finished labels in the stacker.
Adjust the feed until the patch measures the desired length plus 1/8”. Once the patch
length has been set, run a stack approximately 1 ½” high to check for Jumping in the
feed length. If the patches are not of equal length adjust the feed by ½ a revolution of
                   the feed knob and recheck.

Feed registration is set 1/8” (3mm) longer that the desired label length. This allows
the printer to over feed and an Electro Magnetic Clutch to release the feed once the
label reaches the desire imprint and cut position. The following instructions will
walk the operator through the setting.

                   1. Load the desired material to be printed and thread the printer (see treading
                        diagram).
                   2. Set the toggle switch on the right-hand side of the printer to the “blank” position.
                   3. Start the printer and run about 5 labels into the stacker.
                   4. Measure the labels for the label length + 1/8” (3mm). 3 ¼” label feed = 3 3/8”
                   5. Adjust the feed setting until the desired length is met.
                   6. Run about 20 labels into the stacker. Jog the stack of labels to make sure the
printer is not jumping in feed length. If the labels appear to vary - then adjust
the feed in ½ turns of the feed knob and run an additional 20 labels. Recheck the
feed for jumping length and measure the labels for the desired length. It is better
to be under the 1/8” than over.
                   7. Turn the toggle switch to “pre-print” position.
                   8. Move the color contrast sensor over the web to the desired registration path.
The desired pre-printed object to register on must have no other printing 3/4”
(19mm) in the feed direction for the sensor to see. It is desirable that the object
is as large as possible and is straight as possible for the best registration.
                   9. Follow the instructions in the manual “Teach-in procedure” for the multi color
                        contrast sensor.

                              10. Start the printer and run 15 labels to allow the machine to pick up on the
registration point and settle. The LED on the right hand side of the printer will
begin to flash once the sensor sees the mark and is within the last ½” of the feed
cycle. Remove the top label from the stacker and move the contrast sensor in the
feed direction until the copy registers to the pre-print. Repeat until the desired
                                  position is located.
                              11. Adjust the cutter to the desired cut position. (See the main manual for setting the

press the stop button. Identify the positions of the contrast sensor and a position

reference to rest-up the label for the future and if registration has been lost.
                              13. If the printer falls out of registration. Stop the printer. Advance the web to the
mark established for the “Sew-in Box” and restart the printer. Allow the labels
in the printer to track through and the registration to reset.
                              14. If the printer continues to lose registration - check the following:
                                  • Are the web guides set to keep the sense mark path tracking
                                  • Is the main feed closed properly or slipping
                                  • Is the Auxiliary Feed set

                              15. Registration will move slightly:
                                  • Most of the patches, (95%), will be +/- 1/64” (+/- 015”)
                                  • Acceptable registration (90%) +/- 1/32” (.030”)
                                  • This will permit a maximum of 5% that may fall beyond the 1/32” (.030”)

Web Guides Impression Bed
There is one set of web guides on the output side of the impression table. They have
been factory set for the widest material and do not require adjustment for web width.
They provide a back guide and help hold down the web as the ink is stripped off.

                              Setting the Feed Microswitch Window
The feed microswitch position determines the size of the sense mark window. The
sense mark window allows the printer to ignore all preprint on the label - except for a
small section of the label near the end of the feed cycle.
The sensor will register off the first transition color change after the microswitch is
triggered. This will disengage the feed clutch - causing the feed to stop quickly and
                              register the label.
                                                                        #6 NUT

Set-Up 5300EE Electric Eye
                   1) Set feed 1/8” longer than the desired finished label with the toggle switch in the
blank mode. The LED will never flash in the blank mode. Over feeding greater
than 1/8” will result in poor registration.
                   2) Check a stack of patches approximately 1” high by jogging them together on
end. To verify feed registration and that the printer is holding registration.
                   3) Setting feed micro switch to trigger ½” before end of feed. (Once set this should
be OK for all the feed lengths) Use the LL1000 patch or 3 ¼” feed. The shorter
feed LL999 and 997 should be set to 3/8”.
                            • Let the printer come to a stop using the stop button.
                            • Using a patch that is the proper finished cut length – measure ½” back
from end of label and put a line on the patch.
                            • Butt label against bottom of knife blade.
                            • Turn feed motor to advance web until the label reaches mark on patch.
(The feed will not advance if the power is off to the printer)
                            • Loosen the outer mount screw & move the microswitch lever until you
hear it trigger. Make sure switch lever is centered on trigger cam.
                            • Repeat adjustment until +/- 1/16” of the ½” mark. (LL1000 patch)
                   4) Set the printer toggle switch to the “Pre-Print” mode.
                   5) Teach-in the contrast sensor. (See manual)
                   6) Set the sensor to the imprint location for the patch to register to the chase copy
                   7) Advance the patch to the starting position on the outer web guide.
                   8) Start printing and let the copy fall into registration. Move the sensor to register
the imprint to the print. Adjust the cut later.
                   9) Adjust the knife to the desired cut position. (The imprint must be located
properly before the cut can be set.) Moving the imprint moves the cut out of
                      registration).
                   10) Check the registration on a 1” stack of pre-print patches by jogging them
together on end to verify feed registration and cut position are not moving more
than ±1/32” on the finished patches.

Setting up the Web
To achieve the correct placement for the cut, the Web has to be correctly positioned
prior to the start of printing.
                                  • Feed Web through machine. Do not push the Web from the Unwind, it may
buckle in the Impression area and not be seen.
                                  • Open the Feed.
                                  • Pull the Web from the Knife until properly positioned then close the Feed.
                                  • Pull the Web until the left edge of the "Sew Box" is lined up with the left
center of the corresponding "Black Box" on the Registration Sticker. The
"Black Boxes" are not exact locations; they are reference marks to position
                                       the Web.
Note: In this example the 999 Patch is being positioned.

Adjusting the Unwind

The Unwind may be lazy; meaning the speed of acceleration is slow. This can be
corrected by adjusting the two 10-32 Adjusting Screws.
                       • Lift the Unwind Dancer, the material should move quickly.
                       • The Brake can be adjusted so tight that it is very slow to run.
                       • Adjustments can be made by tightening or loosening the 10-32 Adjusting
                           Screws
                       • Loosen black Hex Jam Nut & re-tighten between each test.

Electrical Trouble Shooting Introduction

ELECTRICAL TROUBLE SHOOTING SHOULD BE PERFORMED BY QUALIFIED MAINTENANCE
                                         PERSONNEL

          A. POWER SHOULD BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE MACHINE AT ALL TIMES WHEN IT
IS NOT NEEDED FOR A PARTICULAR TEST.
          B. Before performing any of the electrical troubleshooting, check all the wiring for possible loose
connections due to vibrations, etc. Power should be OFF. Check for any blown fuses on the
             internal fuse bank.
          C. The causes are listed in sequence of probability. Perform the checks in the sequence as listed.
          D. After making the last check listed, if the trouble has not been remedied, a detailed electrical checkout
             should be made.
          E. If fuses are found to be the problem while following the troubleshooting, and they continue to burn out
when they are replaced, a detailed electrical checkout should be made on the machine.
