Liturgy of Hanukkah

How to Light Hanukkah Candles
Shabbat, December 12 to Shabbat, December 19
(Light Hanukkah candles before Shabbat candles)

Light the shammash candle first. Use it to light the other candles. On the first evening of Hanukkah, Friday evening,
December 11, place one candle on the far right as you face the hanukkiyah (the Hanukkah candelabrum). On the
second night and on each succeeding night place the candle for that evening to the left of the candle which preceded it.
Light the newest candle first and then continue lighting the candles from left to right. On both Friday evenings, the
Hanukkah candles are kindled before the Shabbat candles, and on Saturday night the Hanukkah candles are kindled
after Havdalah, which marks the conclusion of Shabbat.

Rabbis have taught us to focus on the metaphor of light.
There is a Midrash from Shemot Rabbah when one
studies the Law, one learns from the light of the Torah.
“The commandment is a lamp. Just as the light of the lamp
is undiminished, even if a million candles are kindled from
it, so will the one who gives towards the fulfillment of any
commandment will kindle the flame. Therefore, the
commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is a light.”
We learn from this Midrash that the light of Hanukkah
is a metaphor for God’s commandments. It is not the
physical, tangible aspect of the Hanukkah candles that is
so powerful, rather it is the hope, belief, and faith that
these lights represent that is so meaningful. The power of
light can truly make a difference in one’s life.
In all of the schools our children and their commitment to
Jewish education is a metaphor of light. Our children spread
the light to the future of the Jewish people and one specific
way is through song. On December 6 the Har Zion Temple
Youth Choir, led by Alex Botwinik, has been invited to
participate with other local synagogue youth choirs, in the
opening ceremony of the Biennial Convention of the United
Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, held this year in
Cherry Hill, New Jersey. As leaders of the Conservative
Movement gather together for a week of Jewish study, our
children will be spreading the light amongst us with their
voices. And, just days later, on Friday December 11, the Har
Zion Temple Youth Choir will once again shed light on our join in the celebration. Take the time to come to our

Har Zionites Volunteered Their Time for Mitzvah Mania Projects
The Middle and High Schools and their families participated in the Philadelphia Jewish Federation's Mitzvah Mania
during Religious School on Sunday, November 1. They put on their work clothes, grabbed shovels and helped plant
native bulbs and perennials, creating beautiful walking trails and restoring existing wetlands to their natural state.
