									                                    Statement of Purpose
         Born in a highly educated family, I have always aspired to continue my education
to the highest level. I want to be a part of a great place of learning all through my life. My
ultimate objective is to be actively involved in engineering research while holding a
faculty position in a reputed university. I feel that doing a PhD in Electrical Engineering
will be a wise move towards reaching my goal. I have chosen Fiber Optic
Communications (FOC) as my field of interest. Knowing the focus on FOC research at
Stanford University and the excellent facilities it provides, I am sure it is the right place
for me to further pursue my research interests. This is the reason I am applying for the
doctoral program at Stanford University.
         A strong urge for academic excellence was instilled in me during my schooldays
itself. I have never compromised on academic performance. The State Government
honored me for standing 21st in the 10th grade examination among 200,000 students. I
secured a position among top 1% students from all over India in the Joint Entrance
Examination to get an admission to the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. My
choice of Electrical Engineering as my major in IIT was made obvious by my love and
fascination for experimental electronics, nurtured by two years of formal study in a high
school elective. My analytical frame of mind, systematic hard work and love for physics
and mathematics helped me secure a GPA of 8.73 in my class. My SPI for the recently
concluded semester (Fall 2002) was 9.5, the grades for which could not be included at the
time of mailing. My academic performance has given me confidence that I can excel at
graduate studies.
         In the Electrical Engineering Department, I chose the five-year Dual Degree
Program since it provides one full year of research experience in addition to the four-year
Bachelor’s program. A student in this program is awarded a Master’s degree along with
the Bachelor’s degree within five years. The thorough and systematic course structure at
IIT Bombay has ingrained into me the basic fundamentals of Communication and Signal
Processing. In addition to the theoretical grounding, the numerous course projects and
assignments have helped me understand the concepts from an application perspective.
Advanced courses in Communications like Fiber Optic Communications,
Communication Networks, Wavelets, and Wireless and Mobile Communications have
made me conversant of the current research problems. I have also worked on a number of
projects, which has given me much deeper understanding of the fundamentals of various
topics. As part of the 'Electronic Design Project', I (along with two other group members)
developed Architecture for VoIP, a unique one involving ordinary telephone sets
interfaced to a computer network. Also, in the 'Junior Year Dissertation', I designed Auto-
Regressive Model based filter for Visual Evoked Potentials (EP).
         For last six months, I have been working as a part of the Fiber Optics Group,
which is one of the most active research groups at IIT Bombay. This has exposed me to
the working environment in an enthusiastic research group. My current research activity
in Fiber Optics Group with Prof. R. K. Shevgaonkar has exposed me to a number of
fields and has broadened my research interests. My initial work on the ‘Influence of
dispersion and non-linearity on OCDMA system’ has been accepted for publication in
PHOTONICS 2002, Sixth International conference on Optoelectronics, Fiber Optics and
Photonics, December 2002. We are currently working on the applications of combination
of Distributed Raman Amplifier (DRA) and Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) to
Optical CDMA (OCDMA) system. I have designed and optimized an OCDMA system
with a configuration of amplifiers that will allow near solitonic propagation of the optical
pulse. Working on this topic has familiarized me to the fields of FOC, Optical CDMA
and broadband amplifiers and has strengthened my fundamentals in those fields.
         At this point I would like to state that in addition to research, I am competent for a
teaching assistantship also. I have been the teaching assistant for the course
“Communication System Theory”. I am due to be a teaching assistant for one more
course, in the next semester. During this courses, as a part of my duties, I evaluated
assignments and test answers, designed questions, and helped students personally. My
Teaching Assistantship work has made me aware of the responsibilities involved in being
a faculty member. A good command of written and spoken English has been my forte,
and has benefited me throughout. My perseverance, problem solving ability, and
dedication have already been put to test by the challenging project and course work under
highly exacting faculty members at IIT Bombay. I feel that my experience on various
projects and excellent foundation in Electrical Engineering will prove to be a valuable
asset for further research.
         I hail from an Indian family with strong ethical and moral values. The ability to
work systematically and diligently is my strength; I inherited that from my parents.
Coupled with these are my strong analytical skills and a penchant for problem solving. I
am pragmatic and rational, but that the same time I have some beliefs. I have the ability to
handle inter-personal relationships smoothly. I am an excellent team-player, being strong
and self-motivated at the same time. I make it a point to be aware of the current affairs
and events. I routinely pursue fitness activities like running and swimming to maintain
my energy levels at their peak. Occasionally, I have a good time at social or recreational
         My interest in Stanford University stems from its strong focus on research in
FOC. It will be a great opportunity for me if I get to work as a part of the OCRL under
guidance of Prof. Leonid G. Kazovsk. I feel that my strong background in
communications and project have enhanced my knowledge of FOC and given me
substantial insight into the field. A doctoral degree will be a very important step in the
lifelong process of learning I intend to enjoy. I aspire to get involved in teaching as a
university faculty member after studying engineering at the post-doctoral level. I am
aware of the dedication and perseverance required for a rewarding career in academics. I
am confident that I will be able to attain my goals and make a significant contribution to
my field of interest given an opportunity to pursue my graduate studies at an outstanding
institution such as Stanford University.
