Awarding the scholarships enhances AORN’s core mission of promoting nursing education and helps prepare the next generation of perioperative nurses to follow in their predecessors’ footsteps. For the 2006-07 academic year, 92 scholarships were awarded totaling $137,000. Nancy Floetke, RN, BS, CNOR - Lakeland FL Page 8 2006 Annual Report (1,1) -21- 2006 annual report.indd 8/27/2007 9:15:58 AM AORN Foundation Programs in 2006 Leadership Conference AORN is dedicated to providing leadership development in a variety of areas, including • developing nurse education curricula focusing on communication, negotiation, conflict management, interdisciplinary teams, and ethics; • establishing mentorship programs for leadership growth; • providing opportunities for nurses to observe and learn from leaders in action; • providing regional education opportunities with a leadership focus; • working collaboratively with other nursing organizations on leadership programs and initiatives; and • the annual July Leadership Conference. The AORN Foundation was proud to support the annual AORN Leadership Conference in Denver July 21-23. The conference, entitled “A Passion for Leadership: A Catalyst for Change,” provided training on key leadership challenges commonly identified by nurses. National speakers shared personal stories on leadership, ethics, coaching, and helping people become the “best they can be.” The three-day conference provided training and tools in skills and practices required for leadership in the nursing profession. Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems, Inc. 2006 Annual Report Page 9 (1,1) -22- 2006 annual report.indd 8/27/2007 9:16:00 AM AORN Foundation Programs in 2006 AORN Research Priorities • Perioperative nursing care that contributes to quality, cost-effective patient outcomes related to safety, physiological integrity, and behavioral responses; • Validation, testing, and refinement of the Perioperative Nursing Data Set; • Evidence-based practice; • Perioperative nursing leadership management (ie, recruitment/retention, resource management, effective teams); and • Health and safety issues affecting perioperative nurses and patients. The AORN two-tiered research grant program is specifically designed to support the development of nurse researchers and to contribute to the scientific knowledge related to perioperative nursing practice. The AORN research grant program recognizes that nurses interested in conducting research develop their expertise as they progress through professional nursing educational programs and obtain research experience. The first tier of the funding is made available for specific research projects. Priority for awarding these types of grant funds is given to AORN members. An example of an annual “Request for Proposals” is the joint AORN/ Sigma Theta Tau Grant for which proposals are due April 1 each year. The second tier of the grant program offers grant funding up to $15,000 for degree completion research efforts. These types of proposals may be submitted on November 1 or April 1, with funding occurring January 1 and July 1, respectively. These types of grants are restricted to AORN members and must address one of AORN’s research priorities available on the AORN web page. In 2005 and 2006 the AORN Foundation was pleased to award a $20,000 research grant to St. Francis Hospital Bon Secours Health System, Greenville, South Carolina. The grant, “The Impact of Inventory and Room Turnover Functions on Nursing When it is Automated,” was made possible by Cardinal Health/Pyxis. Involved in the research was Patricia Fowler, RN, BSN, CNOR, Vice President of Surgical Services; Janet Craig, RN, DHA, Assistant Professor, School of Nursing, Clemson University; Larry Fredenhall, PhD, Associate Professor of Operations Management, Clemson University; and Uzay Damali, MS, Doctoral Student, Operations Management, Clemson University. A generous contribution to the AORN Foundation from Kimberly-Clark Health Care, Roswell, GA, funded a Human Factors five-site pilot study on the effectiveness of human factors training in the operating room. Human factors teaches teams who work together in high-risk, high-threat environments – where adverse outcomes lead to morbidity and mortality – to work together more collaboratively. SaferHealthcare partnered with the AORN Foundation to conduct the operational aspects of the pilot project. Five hospitals from across the country participated in this study: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY; Mayo Clinic Hospital, Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ; Memorial Hospital, Colorado Springs, CO; Jackson Memorial Health Systems, Miami, FL; and St. Joseph Health System, Tawas City, MI. The preliminary results were shared with 2007 Congress attendees in Orlando. The complete findings of the project will be published in a 2007 Fall issue of the AORN Journal. A tool kit will also be developed for AORN members as a part of the project. Page 10 2006 Annual Report (1,1) -25- 2006 annual report.indd 8/27/2007 9:16:01 AM AORN Foundation Programs in 2006 5K Run for Surgical Patient Safety Hardy runners brave cold morning to benefit Foundation Of the 330 Congress attendees who registered, nearly 150 braved the 14° F weather to participate in the AORN Foundation’s ninth annual 5K Run/Walk for Surgical Patient Safety on Wednesday morning. As attendees shivered in the brisk morning air in Anacostia Park, an unknown drill sergeant humorously directed the chilly runners through calisthenics. As the time approached for the start of the race, his job well done, he turned and sprinted off into the sunrise. The winning male runner was Matt Perry an industry representative from Valleylab, Boulder, Colo, with a time of 18 minutes 52 seconds. The winning female runner was Vicky Tiase, RN, BSN, CNOR, a nursing instructor at New York Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, with a time of 19 minutes 53 seconds. Proceeds will benefit AORN education programs. Planned giving offers a wide variety of options available to individuals who wish to include AORN in their financial and estate planning. Legacy of Leadership recognizes those individuals who have remembered the AORN Foundation in their estate planning and notified the Foundation in writing of that intent. To become a member of the Society, you need to acknowledge your planned gift in writing to the AORN Foundation. A growing number of perioperative nurses and individuals have chosen to donate to the AORN Foundation in this special way: a planned gift that reflects the ideals, values, and beliefs that are important to them. There are many ways that you can do this: create a charitable lead or remainder trust or a charitable gift annuity that can provide income to you and/or your family as well as a lasting gift for AORN. You can provide life insurance policies that name AORN as a beneficiary, or you can specify a gift in your last will and testament. Among these various ways to leave your legacy, there may be some vehicles that are especially suited to your wishes.
