BEAU-LOGAN LUTHERAN PARISH PEW BULLETIN New Life 8.00 am Hymns: LHS 822 AT 296 LHS 860 LHS 839 AT 103 St Luke’s 8.30 am Hymns: LH 392 LHS 822 LHS 860 LHS 877 5th July 2009— Fifth Sunday after Pentecost WELCOME Welcome to our worship today. Whether you are a member, a regular visitor, or a newcomer, we are happy to have you with us. We pray that you enjoy your time with our Saviour and with our members. You are invited to join us for a cup of tea or coffee after the service. If you would like to know more about the Christian faith please talk to Pastor Noel or ask for an Elder. We invite you to please sign our visitors book which is on the table as you leave. in the city of our God: God makes her secure forever. Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love. Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness. Mount Zion rejoices, the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments. Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation. For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end. INTROIT : Psalm 48 Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, his holy mountain. St Paul’s It is beautiful in its loftiness, 8.30 am the joy of the whole earth. Hymns: Refer to Hymn Like the utmost heights of Board Zaphon is Mount Zion, the city of the Great King. God is in her citadels; he has shown himself to be her fortress. When the kings joined forces, when they advanced together, they saw her and were astounded; they fled in terror. Trembling seized them there, pain like that of a woman in labor. You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish shattered by an east wind. As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD Almighty, COLLECT: COLLECT: Let us pray for strength in weakness. [silence] Almighty and merciful God, your Son revealed the wonder of your saving love in signs and miracles. Renew your people by your loving kindness, and sustain us in all our weakness by your mighty power. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. WEEK: READINGS THIS WEEK: 2 Samuel 5:1-5,9,10 David becomes king over Israel 2 Corinthians 12:2-10 Paul boasts of his weaknesses There were people demolishing the gospel in the Corinthian congregation claiming special revelation for their authority. Paul turns the argument away from human strength in the manner in which he refers to his own direct revelation of the third heaven (ie the direct presence of God). He had been given revelations which could easily beget pride and conceit. That, of course, would just as much hinder the gospel proclamation. God accordingly gave him some kind of severe suffering (the 'thorn' is undefined) which incapacitated him personally, which Satan naturally tried to exploit for his own purposes. However, God showed in this way that it was not Paul's strength which got the gospel out through Paul's prodigious efforts. It was obvious that God's strength was having perfect effect in spite of Paul's weakness, but also through it. Mark 6:1-13 Jesus rejected in his home town; sends out the Twelve God always calls for humble faith and shows himself and his works in answer to it. When Jesus the 'local boy' came back to his hometown, faith was completely lacking. The people rejected him. Hence Jesus could not do the works of his Father. When Jesus sent out his disciples among the villages, he sent them with obvious lack of human resources. They were thus able to see from their own experience that it is also necessary for those who minister the word and the Spirit's power. Human approval of their message was secondary to simply proclaiming it. Demons were therefore subject to them, and many sick were cured. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH: Call to Prayer God speaks to us through his word, through which the Holy Spirit reaches into people's lives and changes them. Let us pray to our loving heavenly Father, who is concerned about each one of us and does not abandon us. The regular response, OR: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Suggested Intercessions * For the continued preaching of the gospel and the right administration of the sacraments. * For pastors, parish workers, youth workers, elders, pastoral assistants, leaders in the church, and all those who help bring the gospel to a world where people are blinded by popular opinion and cannot see the truth. * For our nation's leaders - the Queen, her representatives, the parliaments, the prime minister and cabinet, and departments, the opposition and the whole system of government. * For all Christians throughout the world who are persecuted for their faith. * For those living close to or below the poverty line; the homeless, the unemployed, pensioners, students, Indigenous people.
