legislation that had never occurred in its
  history!
 Today we will delve into those changes
  and explore…The NEW DEAL.
The New Deal Standard

    over until the economy recovered

    production and restore the economy

 Reform – Designed to change the
economy so a depression would never
    happen again
     Social Security Act (1935)
              Reform
 Social Security
    Act - Insured
    Americans against
    unemployment
    and provided them
    with limited
    retirement
    services
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)(1933)
                      Reform

    bank deposits so
    that people would
    not lose their
    savings if a bank
    failed
Securities and Exchange Commission S.E.C. (1934)
                     Reform

 S.E.C. – Prevents
    fraud in the stock
    market and guards
    against another

    Authority – Built
    government owned
    dams along the
    Tennessee River to
    prevent floods and
    generate electricity.
New Deal Supported the Arts

 The New Deal
  supported the arts by
  giving artists money
  through the WPA to
  support their
  creations during the
  Depression.
 Roosevelt saw art as
  a necessity not a
  luxury.
       *New Deal Criticism*

 Many people criticized the New Deal
1. They felt the New Deal violated
     American tradition of individual
     responsibility.
2. They felt the programs made people
     too dependent on the Federal
     Government.
Roosevelt's Court Packing Plan
            (1937)
 The biggest barrier to FDR during the New
Deal was the Supreme Court denying
  legislation.
 Roosevelt's Court Packing Plan – Failed
attempt by Roosevelt to appoint one new
  justice for each over 70.
 Roosevelt did this to help his New Deal
  legislation not get overturned.
 This was seen as unconstitutional and even
  hurt Roosevelt’s popularity.
