We look forward to Ms Jones joining the English faculty. • Ms Sonja Howard has been appointed as a Temporary part-time CD and Drama Teacher until the end of Term 2 to allow Mr Montgomery to take up his acting Director of Curriculum position. Years 3 – 6 HICES Cross Country Carnival Well done to everyone who participated in the HICES Cross Country Carnival and a special congratulations to the 12 students selected to compete at the CIS Cross Country Carnival. Thanks to all those involved in organising this event especially Miss Wright, Mrs Harper and Mr Von Dobschutz. Year 4 AFL Gala Day Last week Year 4 participated in the AFL Gala Day and I have been told that their behaviour on the day was “exemplary and they were tremendous sportspeople throughout the day”. Well done to all the students for being great ambassadors for the College by assisting team members and even other teams during the day. Thank you also to the staff involved: Mrs Mann, Mrs Munsie and Miss Cassidy. Parent Teacher Student Conferences Over the past fortnight parents, teachers and students in Years 5 - 11 have met to discuss the academic and pastoral achievements of students. Thank you to all the staff involved in co-ordinating these important conferences that help to ensure open lines of communication between home and the College so that we can work in partnership for the benefit of students/children. “See You at the Pole” On Thursday last week about 150 students braved the wind and rain to gather at 7:15am to pray for the College, the world and each other. Their gathering was part of “See you at the Pole”, an international movement encouraging students to pray openly for their school communities on a set day in May each year. They were joined by a small number of teaching staff and over 20 alumni of the College who continue to support our students through their involvement in local churches. Thanks to our GLO, Mission and Service Prefects who led the way in organising the event and to Facebook, which allowed rapid and effective dissemination of information including the last minute change of venue. As one of the alumni put it in his encouragement afterwards, “awesome work . . . it was sick . . . crank that witness!” Fun Friday Last Friday, Year 12 organised another Fun Friday to raise money for the Scholarship Fund. Despite the rain everyone had an enjoyable time eating from the sausage sizzle, including staff being able to water bomb the Year 12 students. It was great fun – ice blocks and cookies on a cold, rainy day as one of the students said “we really enjoyed water bombing the Year 12’s in the space invaders game but somehow the Year 12’s caught the water bombs we were throwing at them and threw them back at us on the balcony”. Thanks to Mrs Thompson for overseeing the students who organised this event. continued on next page Page 1 of 12 Monday 15th - Wk 8A 8 Incursion: “The Hurting Game” House Theatresports Competition 7 & 8 AFL Tuesday 16th 5 @ Zoo 12 Biology @ UNSW Wednesday 17th 6 Gala Day 11 German Day Club 50 & Club 100 Evening Event Thursday 18th House Theatresports Competition 5 - 8 Mother/Daughter BBQ & Chapel 12 Visual Arts “Panel Night” Digital (SLR) II Evening Course Friday 19th JS Assembly 12 noon Inter-House Theatresports Competition ............................................................. The target for the whole region was $35,000 and our teams raised $8,124.50. So far over $41,000 has been collected from the Rouse Hill Region. The Salvation Army thanked the College for the assistance and co-operation over the whole weekend and will return to present Certificates to all who helped. Thank you also to Mr Yablsley and Captains Sue and Dennis McGuigan for all the work they do in co-ordinating this worthwhile event. Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Scheme: On Saturday 23rd May three of our students, Daniel Ferguson, Stephanie Haywood and Nick Morrison were presented with the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award at Government House. The presentation was by Her Excellency, the Governor of New South Wales, Professor Marie Bashir. Our very own Mrs Tweed also participated in the ceremony by delivering the Vote of thanks and presentation of gifts to the Governor and other official guests. This award is not easily gained and I congratulate the students for participating in such a worthwhile programme and encourage our present students undertaking the Award to continue through to Gold. It is a most worthwhile training for life and well regarded by employers. Thank you to Mrs Tweed for your dedication to and leadership of the Award Programme. Congratulations Congratulations to Brooke Hackett (Year 9) who competed last weekend in the State Water Ski Racing Titles in Port Macquarie. Brooke placed first in the Under 16 Girl’s competition. Well done Brooke! Building the Education Revolution - Update The National School Pride funding to refurbish and renew existing infrastructure has been officially approved for the College. We will be in receipt of $200,000 that we will use to redevelop the K - 12 Canteen which we hope will include a cafe - style facility and will benefit all students and parents across the whole campus. This project will need to commence by 1 July to end in January 2010. Parents will shortly receive information about our 2009 Annual Appeal which is seeking to raise further funds for the Canteen re-development in areas which are not permitted under the terms of the Pride funding criteria. Thank you to Mr Jennings for the successful grant application and the Canteen Committee in their work in finalising the plans for the re-development of the Canteen. Sabbatical This will be the last Parent Bulletin for me this term as I will be taking eight weeks sabbatical leave – 5 weeks of term and the 3 weeks of the Term Break. During this time, I will be furthering my own professional development by attending international conferences on Service Learning, Learning and an Educational Reform symposium as well as some recreational time. Mr Scott Marsh will be taking up the position of Acting Headmaster and Mr John Montgomery will be Acting Director of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning in my absence. In the last Bulletin, I made mention of the success of “Seussical” the musical. Elsewhere in this Bulletin are photos of that extraordinary production. Let me take this opportunity to wish you all well for the rest of the Term, to enjoy the rest provided by the Term Break and for our students to continue to focus on their studies - especially Year 10 and 12 as they move towards the School Certificate and HSC exams at the end of the year. Contact Christian at Hills Community Aid and Information Service Inc: 9639 8620 Year 7 History Incursion On Friday 8th May, half of Year 7 went to the Blue Mountains on a Geography excursion while the other half had a History incursion at the College. The 3 classes were divided up and staff from the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Macquarie University took a session each. There we learnt about the Roman soldier’s life. This session was lead by Karl Van Dyke, the curator of the Museum of Ancient Cultures. By the sounds of it, a Roman soldier’s life is extremely gruesome and unpleasant. Mr Van Dyke brought in a long and short sword and also a helmet. He also brought in an expensive sword priced at $15000! In another session Ms Philippa Medcalf gave us a bit more of an idea about archaeology, Egyptology, underwater archaeology and rescue archaeology. There we learnt many interesting things about Pompeii, the Kyremia (a ship from BC), a rescue operation in Parramatta and also a tomb that people from Macquarie uni found. The 3rd session was run by Jaye McKenzie-Clark. She is an archaeologist and she has been to Pompeii herself for work. Her speciality is pottery. There we got to handle (with care) replicas and actual ancient objects. She then explained a bit about them to us. We had a interesting time and it taught us a lot about History and Archaeology. The three teachers that were supervising were Mrs Harper, Miss Dundas and Mrs Hibbert. Luke Mewjork Venturing Out! Be prepared to have a super-specialawesome day!
