                                      RABBI’S MESSAGE
Dear Congregants,
The summer months are quiet on the Jewish calendar. In terms of calendrical events, the late
summer is dominated by “The Three Weeks” of mourning the Temple from Shiva-Asar B’Tammuz
(17th of Tammuz, which falls on July 9th this year) to Tisha B’Av (9th of Av, on July 30th). Both days are
associated with calamities throughout Jewish history, from the biblical era to the destruction of both
Temples and on to modern times. The 17th of Tammuz, a minor fast day, is traditionally the day when
our ancestors committed the sin of the Golden Calf at the foot of Mount Sinai, and also marks the
breaching of the walls of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 BCE. The 9th of Av is a major fast, the
culmination of the Three Weeks, and the most significant occasion of public mourning in the Jewish
year. Tradition considers this the date when the generation which left Egypt and received Torah at
Sinai was condemned – following the Golden Calf incident – to perish in the desert rather than march
directly to Israel. We will mark the 9th of Av with special services evening and morning, with low lights,
ark draped in black, and the mournful tones of Eicha (Lamentations).
In the cycle of Torah readings, meantime, the summer is a wonderful time of year. After reading a
book and a half of rules, regulations, instructions, rituals, and sacrifices, all given at the foot of Sinai,
the Torah returns to significant narrative in the book of Bamidbar (Numbers) with the aftermath of the
Golden Calf, the tale of the spies, the rebellion of Korach, Balaam and his talking donkey, Pinchas’s
vigilantism, and battles with Amalek, Bashan, Emor, and Moab; after which we turn to the speeches of
our teacher Moses in the book of D’varim (Deuteronomy) including – both in the same week – the
Shema and the repetition of the Ten Commandments, two of the most important statements of
theological summation to be found in our bible. If you love the great stories of the Torah, this is a time
of year to be in shul regularly on Shabbat mornings.
For our shul in particular, the summer is a lively time as we have our full complement of members, with
all our snowbirds now back in the nest. This summer we anticipate more Friday night services at
Haviland’s Cove, which have been very enjoyable in past years. My parents will be visiting for much
of August and into September, and look forward to seeing and spending time with many of you here in
Glens Falls this summer.
Finally, I am happy to note that I will continue to serve as your student rabbi during this summer and
the coming year. I want to express my deepest thanks to the many members who have supported,
encouraged, and assisted me during the current year, and to thank you in advance for you continued
collaboration in our project of maintaining and improving our shul and maximizing Jewish vibrancy in
the North Country. We need and deeply appreciate your participation, and also your good ideas; for
programming, fundraising, publicizing, educating, and recruiting. We can’t always try out every good
idea, but every suggestion is valued and respected by myself and the board.
Have a wonderful summer!
Rabbi Marmon
