All meetings start at 1:00 p.m. with a pot-luck dinner and include a business meeting and a culture presentation. September 13, 2009 – Holton, KS Culture program will be – Doug will teach us the Lord’s Prayer in Cherokee. October 11, 2009 –– Topeka, KS Culture program will be – Don will share history and culture of the Cherokee November 6, 2009 – Topeka, KS Veterans Pow Wow at Gage Park Zoo Shelter House 6:00 pm November 8, 2009 – Holton, KS Veterans Pow Wow Celebration December 13, 2009 – Topeka, KS Culture program will be – Bobbie will demonstrate weaving. 9th Annual Veterans Pow Wow Friday, November 6, 2009 – 6:00-10:00 pm Gage Park Zoo Shelter House, Topeka, KS Preparations for the NCNOLT Kansas Awi Akta District 9th Annual Inter-tribal Veterans Pow Wow are well underway. The Chairman, Don Anderson, has been working hard to bring together an exciting evening of fun, dancing, and thanking Veterans. Our purpose is to honor all Veterans and those currently serving in the military. The host Gourd Society will be the Standing Bear Inter-Tribal Brotherhood from Topeka, KS; Head Drum, Night Hawks, Jonathan Echjols head singer; Head Gourd Dancer, Art Norquay; Head Man Dancer, Galen Hubbard (Prairie Band Potawatomi); Head Woman Dancer, Sue Hubbard (Choctaw); Master of Ceremonies, Terry Moore (Prairie Band Potawatomi); Arena Directors, Doug Ashcraft and Del Thompson (both Northern Cherokee). Admission is free – save the date and join us in thanking and honoring all Veterans! At left is a picture of Eric at the Reunion wearing a Boogerman Mask for the Boogerman Dance. The day started with gathering and visiting with a potluck lunch about noon with fry bread provided by the Doug Myers family of Manhattan, Kansas. After lunch Chief Beverly Baker gave a talk on the history of the Nation and our Federal Recognition status and the work that needs to be done. Elder Mike Ballard, Topeka, Kansas, led the Going To Water Ceremony followed by talk on Family and Tribal Unity. At this point the Booger Man made an appearance and led the Booger Man Dance. The next activity was the Beaver Dance with Eric Lancaster singing at the drum. The afternoon concluded with Standing Bear Intertribal Brotherhood Drum from Topeka, Kansas providing a mini-Pow Wow during which a naming ceremony was held for Dana Maxwell, Oklahoma District Representative. Festivities concluded about 5:00 pm with a prayer led by Standing Bear Drum, due to the hot weather. The Tribal Council, at their meeting on Friday, June 26, at the Buttonwood Tribal Office, decided to hold the 2010 Recognition Day Reunion Saturday, October 16, 2010, with the Tribal Council meeting the evening before. The cost is $5/per patch with shipping and handling costing $1/per patch. The patches are in the NCNOLT colors of red and white. They look great sewed to a hat, jacket, shirt, purse, etc. I have scanned the patch (picture at left) so you can see it in color. All orders are to be sent to Mike Ballard, 4327 SW 17th Terrace, Topeka, KS 66604 with the number of patches wanted and a money order for the full purchase amount, including shipping and handling. Corn Meal Mush a-ni-s-ta Add to pot of salted boiling water enough cornmeal to thicken and this should cook until meal is thoroughly done and mushy. Serve with milk or butter. Or it may be sliced when cold and fried. Cabbage s-que-wi Wilt cabbage in small amount of grease, add some pieces of green pepper and cook until cabbage turns red. Serve with cornbread. Conchita M.
