American Community Survey 2005-2009 Five-Year Estimates
Wisconsin Summary for Persons Age 65+
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey is an ongoing survey that covers the same type
of information previously collected every ten years by the decennial Census long form questionnaire. The
American Community Survey (ACS) replaces the long form survey in the 2010 Census. Because ACS
data are collected continuously, the Census Bureau will release new information every year, so it is no
longer necessary to rely on a 10-year snapshot that becomes more dated throughout the decade.

Because the ACS survey sample is smaller than that used for the Census long form, the Census Bureau
plans to combine three to five years of survey data to create statistics for all but the largest counties and
metro areas. This allows the number of individual surveys used to grow large enough
to protect confidentiality. The tables below are based on the ACS Five-Year File for 2005-2009,
which contains information for all 72 Wisconsin counties: The only ACS file covering counties of all sizes.
Starting in December, 2010, a five-year file will be released every year to update our knowledge about
population dynamics in Wisconsin.

Numbers and percents represent estimated average values for each item over the five-year period
2005-2009. For complete information about sampling, calculating estimates, and other aspects of the
ACS, visit the Census Bureau's ACS website at: http://www.census.gov/acs/www/ .

NOTE : Disability statistics will NOT be updated until the 2008-2012 file is released, because major changes in the wording
of the disability questions in 2008 make it impossible for the ACS to produce five-year combined data tables until there
are five years of data to combine, which will occur in 2012 (data from 2008-2012). Larger counties (population 65,000
or more) can get updated data on disability from the annual single-year ACS releases.
