Nadal and Henin ‘three-peat’ in Paris
11 June 2007 Issue 24

Rafael Nadal and Justine Henin both notched up a third successive Roland Garros title as the 2007 championships came
to an end at the weekend.

Twenty-one-year-old Nadal became just the second man in 93 years, and the first since Bjorn
Borg in 1980, to win in Paris for three consecutive years while Henin became just the second
woman in the Open Era, after Monica Seles in 1992, to lift the trophy three years in a row.

A delighted Nadal said afterwards that all three titles were special for different reasons, “[The]
first year was very emotional because it was the first. Second year was very emotional because
I come back after injury. And this year, I am very happy because I play my best tennis here.”

                            Nadal defeated Roger Federer 63 46 63 64 in Sunday’s men’s final, again ending the Swiss’s
dream of holding all four Grand Slam titles at the same time. The Spaniard took advantage of Rafael Nadal
                                                                                                                           (Photo: Paul Zimmer)
an unusually high number of unforced errors by his opponent to avenge his recent defeat to
Federer at Hamburg. Although the Swiss was the only player to win a set from Nadal at Roland Garros, he was only able
to convert one of his 17 break points.

Henin, watched by some of her family, with whom she has recently re-established contact after being estranged from
them for many years, swept past Ana Ivanovic 61 62 in the women’s final on Saturday.

“I wanted this victory so much. You cannot imagine how strong I felt, even if I was a little bit
nervous at the beginning of the match. But I couldn’t lose this one. I really wanted to win
another title here in Paris.” said a delighted Henin afterwards. The Belgian, who has now won
four Roland Garros titles, has lost just once in Paris in the last five years and has won her last 17
matches at Roland Garros in straight sets.

Ivanovic was one of three Serbian semifinalists in Paris, along with Jelena Jankovic and Novak
Djokovic, but after being a point from a 2-0 lead in the first set was affected by nerves in her first
                                                            Grand Slam final.
Justine Henin Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor, who have announced that they will split after this year’s
                                 and Ana Ivanovic
(Photo: Paul Zimmer) Wimbledon, added a first Roland Garros men’s doubles title to the US and Australian Open titles
that they had previously won, coming back from a slow start to defeat Lukas Dlouhy and Pavel
Vizner, who were attempting to become the first all-Czech men’s doubles team to win a major, 26 63 64.

Mara Santangelo tasted Grand Slam success for the first time as she and Alicia Molik, overcame Katarina Srebotnik and
Ai Sugiyama 76(5) 64 in the women’s doubles final. Molik’s second women’s doubles Grand Slam title came just a year
after returning from a career-threatening inner ear infection. Srebotnik was also on the losing side in the mixed doubles,
as she and Nenad Zimonjic lost out to Andy Ram and home favourite Nathalie Dechy 75 63.

Debut titles for Cornet and Ignatik
Alize Cornet and Uladzimir Ignatik won debut junior Grand Slam titles on Sunday to become champions of Roland
                            Garros 2007.
11 June 2007 Issue 24

Cornet brought her junior career to a close and sent her home crowd into delirium with a gritty 46 61 60 win over Mariana
Duque Marino of Colombia, while 16-year-old Belarusian Ignatik eased past a tired Greg Jones of Australia 63 64.

Cornet had a smooth run through the draw until she encountered Ksenia Milevskaya (BLR) in
the semifinals where she fought back from a set down to win 26 63 75. In the other half of the
draw, unseeded Duque Marino caused an upset in the first round when she took out tenth
seed Russian Ksenia Pervak and then the No. 1 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, also from
                                                          Russia, in a marathon semifinal 75 67(0) 75.

In the final Cornet fought back from a set down, showing superior conditioning and self-belief
                                                          to wear the Colombian down.

“In the first set she played beautiful tennis,” admitted Cornet. “She is very strong; she is very
good and I was thinking, if she goes on playing like this she deserves to win, because she
Alize Cornet (FRA) would surprise me on each shot. She was fighting so it was very difficult for me. Then I went
(Photo: Susan Mullane) on playing my game, and tried to stop making mistakes and not to give her any points. And
then I was stronger, mentally speaking, I think, so this is why I won.”

The top seeds also suffered in the final stages of the boys’ draw. No. 1 Matteo Trevisan succumbed to Greg Jones 64
67(6) 108 in a thrilling semifinal, while second seed Jonathan Eysseric went out in the quarterfinals to Lithuania’s
Ricardis Berankis. Ignatik then defeated Berankis in the quarters and came back from a set and 30 down to American
Kellen Damico in the semis to reach his sixth tournament final.

“I’m really happy for this championship,” said Ignatik, a member of the ITF Touring Team. “Before the tournament, I
couldn’t even think I’m going to be in the final. But the day before the final, I thought I can win it. So I was trying to do
my best and I did it. I couldn’t believe I did it. And I still don’t trust myself that I won.”

Ignatik will rise to No.1 in the ITF’s Junior Rankings on Monday, one of the many
bonuses of winning Junior Roland Garros. “It was my dream. One year ago, I was just
150 in the rankings, and I was watching on the French Open on the ITF website and I
couldn’t imagine that I’m going to be here next year. But I’m here for this year, and I
                            won it.”

Ignatic always seemed to be the stronger player against Jones, who still appeared to
be feeling the effects of Friday’s defeat of Trevisan. “I got outplayed in the end and
there wasn’t a lot I could do,” said Jones. “He played very well from start to finish and
I started a bit flat. I’m disappointed but I’m proud of what I did.” Uladzimir Ignatik (BLR)
                                                                                                                               (Photo: Susan Mullane)
The boys doubles titles went to Italian Thomas Fabbiano and Belarusian Andrei
Karatchenia who defeated Kellen Damico and Jonathan Eysseric 64 60. The girls doubles title was won by Ksenia
Milevskaya and Poland’s Urszula Radwanska who scored a 61 64 victory over Romanian Sorana Cirstea and USA’s Alexa Glatch.

Top seeds reign at Wheelchair Roland Garros
Shingo Kunieda (JPN) and Esther Vergeer (NED) secured the titles at the inaugural Roland Garros Wheelchair Masters
Series, which took place from 6-8 June.

The tournament began with Vergeer registering her 250th successive win in NEC Tour singles matches after defeating
Karin Suter-Earth (SUI) 60 60 in the first round. After dispatching Lucy Shuker (GBR) in the semifinals, Vergeer went on to

face world No. 4 Florence Gravellier in the final, who despite losing to the world No. 1, managed to steal a set to mark just
the third time since since August 2004 that Vergeer has lost a set in singles matches.

The men’s singles went according to seeding as Kunieda met world No. 2 Robin Ammerlaan (NED) in the final, the
Japanese star winning the big points to seal a 63 64 victory.

The French crowd was able to celebrate a home win in the men’s doubles as second seeds Michael Jeremiasz and
Stephane Houdet outplayed top seeds Kunieda and Satoshi Saida to triumph 76(4) 61. Two-time Paralympic champions
Vergeer and Maaike Smit eased to another major title with a 61 64 victory in the women’s doubles final.

Invacare World Team Cup begins in Stockholm
The 2007 Invacare World Team Cup, the ITF’s annual flagship wheelchair team event, gets
underway in Stockholm on Monday 11 June, with 64 teams from 34 nations competing for honours
in men’s, women’s, quad and junior events over the next seven days.

With home support, No. 4 seed Sweden cannot be discounted from causing an upset in the men’s World Group 1, but last
year’s finalists Netherlands and France will be major contenders again along with 2003 champions and top seeds Japan,
who have the talent of world No. 1 Shingo Kunieda to rely on. Robin Ammerlaan once again leads a strong Dutch
contingent looking for a fifth Invacare World Team Cup men’s title and a third in succession.

Netherlands will be fighting for its 20th Invacare World Team Cup in the women’s event and will be a firm favourite for the
title, with world No. 1 Esther Vergeer at the forefront of their attack.

France’s Florence Gravellier helped steer her nation to a top four finish for the first time in nine years in 2006, and as
second seed in this year’s event, France will seek to improve upon that this year. Canada will also be in the hunt along
with 1994 champion USA and Great Britain. A strong Asian challenge from former finalists Japan and Korea will be
bolstered by a bold showing from China’s women, who face a tricky start to the tournament having been drawn to meet
                            Netherlands in the first round.

In 2006, the United States became the first nation to win the Invacare World Team Cup Quad title a record four times and
the team will be one of the favourites this year to make it five titles and three victories in succession. The USA has two
of the world’s top three quad singles players in David Wagner and Nick Taylor, who also share a long unbeaten doubles
record. If the Americans were to slip up, however, three-time champion Israel, last year’s runner-up Italy and the
Netherlands will be among those keen to wrest the title away.

The Junior event is once again supported by ITF Wheelchair Tennis Programme Partner, The Cruyff Foundation. Great
Britain will be among the favourites to win the World Team Cup Junior title for the first time. Their team includes all four
players who helped Great Britain win three of the four titles on offer at February’s Junior Masters in Tarbes.

                                                                                                                                    Page 3
