Nowadays, it is more of a formality than a advantage. Things like image tags, keyword tags, meta descriptions and H1 headings are all a sign of a well designed site. It gets a certain amount of “respect” from the search engines. By following all the formalities you will demonstrate that you mean business and that you are not just some crappy site.
