                            EU High Representative for CFSP,
                     congratulates new Indian Prime Minister

Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy,
sent a message of congratulations to the new Prime Minister of India, Manmohan SINGH,
following the results of the recent Parliamentary elections:

"I wish to congratulate you on the occasion of the inauguration of your Government. The EU-
Indian relationship is well-rooted in the mutual respect for democracy, the rule of law and human
rights. Our dialogue on political and security issues has made very good progress over the last few
years. I am confident that at the next EU-India Summit we can further deepen this relationship for
the benefit of our peoples.

I have been encouraged by your public commitment to the continuation of the bilateral dialogue
between India and Pakistan. The EU continues to see dialogue as the only means to resolve
outstanding issues in the region, in line with the declarations made by South Asian nations at the
recent Summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC), which
demonstrated the region's desire for peace, stability and economic prosperity."
