STANDARDS ACTIVITIES – List and Describe Subjects
Standard 41.9-2000, Calorimeter Test Methods for Mass Flow Measurement of Volatile Refrigerants: TC 8.01 voted to reaffirm
this standard at Kansas City (July 2004)
Standard 41.10-2003, Flowmeter Test Methods for Mass Flow Measurement of Volatile Refrigerants: Published in 2003
Standard 23-1993R, Method of Testing for Rating, Positive Displacement Compressors and Condensing Units: Public Review
was completed in February 2004. Publication is the next step.
SPC 179P, Method of Test for Life Testing Positive Displacement Refrigerant Compressors: First committee meeting held in
Nashville (June 2004)
At the Kansas City Meeting, TC 8.01 proposed that ASHRAE create a new standard titled, “Method of Test for Rating
Compressors and Condensing Units that Operate on Supercritical Refrigerants.” ASHRAE will probably announce this new
SPC before the Nashville meeting. TC 8.01 will recommend Dan Manole to Chair this new SPC.

TC 8.01 – POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT COMPRESSORS
Nashville, TN – June 27, 2004
The TC 8.01 meeting was called to order by Vice-Chair Georgi Kazachki who acted as Chair
because Rick Hall was absent due to a death in the family. Handout materials were distributed at
the outset of the meeting.
For 2004, TC 8.01 has 11 Voting Members plus 2 International Members who have voting
privileges whenever they are able to attend the committee meetings, but their absence does not
negatively affect the quorum. A quorum of Voting Members was established – 8 of 11 Voting
Minutes from the last meeting, June 2003 – Kansas City, were distributed. TC 8.01 voted to
accept the minutes by show of hands (8-0) after a few revisions were incorporated.
Dan Manole, Programs Subcommittee Chair led the discussion for potential forums and seminars
for the Orlando meeting. Package deadline for Orlando Meeting is 06 August 2004. Members
are encouraged to identify papers for Orlando.
Forum topic, “What kills compressors-what should a life test standard look like?” was
A motion was approved to sponsor seminar topic “Commercial and Residential
Applications with Natural Refrigerants” for the Orlando meeting.
A motion was approved to co-sponsor with TC 3.4 seminar topic “Can lubricants reduce
compressor noise?” for Orlando or Denver.
Possible future seminar topic, “Admissable Oil Systems” was suggested. Contact Chris
Jerry Wurm, Research Committee Chair, informed committee that RTAR format has changed
and is available on the ASHRAE website. Only 17 of 47 RTAR’s submitted were approved. Of
those 17, only 14 were listed as a priority.
RTAR, “Thermophysical and Thermodynamical Properties of CO2/Lubricant Mixtures,” to be
potentially co-sponsored with TC 3.1 – Refrigerants and Secondary Coolants and TC 3.4 –
Lubrication. TAC Section 8 Head, Eckhard Groll volunteered to write RTAR for research
committee review for August submission.
ASHRAE’s deadline for RTARs is August 1, 2004 for approval in October 2004 (ASHRAE only
approves research proposals annually). Work statement deadline is 15 December 2004 for
approval January 2005. Bids will be requested during the first quarter of 2005. Submit WS direct
to Tom Kuehn (U of M) RL8@ashrae.org.
ASHRAE’s deadline for Service to Research Award is September 30, 2004.
Jack O’Brien, Standards Subcommittee Chair, reported that:
Standard 23, Method of Testing for Rating, Positive Displacement Compressors and
Condensing Units, has been completed and submitted to ASHRAE for publication.
SPC 179P, Methods of Test for Life Testing Positive Displacement Refrigerant
Compressors, expressed a need for international members. Georgi Kazachki agreed to
send a letter on behalf of TC 8.01 requesting international participation. Alex Leyderman
volunteered to provide input for defining reliability testing.
Tino Mendez, our 2006 Refrigeration Handbook Liaison, described the process for revising our
chapters in the Refrigeration Handbook. TC 8.01 must approve the final draft of the revisions no
later than at the Denver meeting in June 2005. Final submission is due August 2005. Chapter
46 “: Dehumidification, Charging and Factory Testing” will have the final draft at Orlando
meeting for approval at the Denver meeting.
Forrest Yount of Carrier – Charlotte request to replace Jim Mangini as secretary was
Phillip Johnson of Carrier-Charlotte requested committee membership.
ASHRAE has increased the available space on the website for each committee to 40 MB. Dan
Manole volunteered to contact Mike Vaughn to request more information concerning the website
