Welcome to the 2010-2011 School Year
We welcomed 97 students to the Opening Ceremony of the High School this year. The 97 students come from at least 28 different countries. I say at least, because
in looking at their backgrounds, it becomes so complicated it is difficult to say where someone is from. We celebrate the international diversity and live our mission
of global responsibility and open-mindedness. We also honored our host country of Serbia and said hvala! for the kindness of the Serbs in sharing their local culture
and customs with the mostly expatriate student body. I made of special mention of our seniors, who will be facing a wonderful year of opportunities and challenges.
They are the role models for the school and we are all here to support them as they embark on their final year at ISB.
As the instructional leader of the school, I outlined the importance of maintaining an environment for learning and excellence. The faculty identified absences and
late arrivals to class as the two biggest obstacles to higher student achievement. I stressed the importance of regular attendance and punctuality and the steps we
are taking as a school to improve this area. I would like to mention to parents that personal electronic devices are not allowed in any classroom and bags and purses
must be stored in a locker. A better compliance to these issues will benefit all of our students for better learning.

We are pleased to be able once again to administer the PSATs to all Grade 10 students this year free of charge. There are limited tests also available for Grade 11 students who would
like to retake the PSAT as well. For the Class of 2012 this is the last opportunity to take this exam before the actual SATs, and can also qualify U.S. citizens who score highly for National
Merit Scholarships and put them on the radar and mailing lists of colleges and universities that echo their interests. There is a USD $20 fee (to cover costs) for Grade 11 students who
take this exam. Interested families should contact me as soon as possible to organize payment and secure their spots; the final deadline to register with me is October 1, 2010. The
exam will take place on the morning of Wednesday, October 13, 2010.

SAT: Fall 2010 SAT registration is now open for all dates. Please note that the deadlines listed below constitute final registration and students should register earlier if at all possible. ISB’s
CEEB code is 799002 and the Serbian Country Code is: RS 499.

Information on fees, study help, which subject tests are available on which dates, and much more is available at:
          October 9 SAT—Deadline September 10
          November 6 SAT—Deadline October 8
          December 4 SAT—Deadline November 4

TOEFL: Grade 12 students who need to take the TOEFL exam should register now (even for advanced dates) as space fills up very quickly in Belgrade. Students who are unsure whether they
need to take this exam should contact the counseling office as soon as possible. The TOEFL testing center in Belgrade is conveniently located at the IACBG office downtown and
registration is done through the TOEFL website:

College and University fair: I am delighted to inform you that ISB will be hosting a university fair in
November at which over 20 universities from 9 different nations will be in attendance. Much more information on this event will be forthcoming shortly, and I would welcome parent
attendance (or assistance!) at this event.

Schedule changes: Parents and students are reminded that schedule changes can be accommodated
through the first two four-day rotations of the school. This year the closing date is Wednesday, September 1.

Please feel free to contact me with any needs you have this year!

The ISB Library has improved yet again! Our book collection is now first class.
The first shipment of books arrived and is on the shelves ready to be checked out. A second shipment will arrive in October with more

I have focused on IB connections, Classic Literature, Internationalism, High interest and Low level for EAL students, Early Reader chapter
books, Boy-friendly books, Popular Fiction, plus improving our History and Environmental sections. We have several databases including
the largest one, EBSCO.

Check the Library Catalog (top of page) at school or home to see our books and online resources. Please email or drop in if you need
a password to any of the research/educational sites we subscribe to.

Thank you from the Library Team!

1:1 Laptop Program Begins! Every school year starts with excitement and anticipation. But, this year is especially exciting at the Middle School
because it marks the beginning of our one-to-one laptop program. After several orientation sessions with our Technology Integration Specialist, Mr. Paul McKenzie, the
students passed their “driver’s test” and received their laptops. They were literally jumping for joy! The teachers are just as anxious and excited to begin working
with the students using their laptops. This program will truly allow us to provide our students a 21st Century education. Look for updates on what the students are
learning and creating throughout the year. We encourage parents to contact us with questions and concerns about the program. This is a pilot program and we want to
do our best to assist parents in supporting and supervising their children when they are at home with their school issued computers. We need to hear from you about
the challenges you are facing with your middle school children.

The Health Department wishes you a great and successful start of a new school year!

My name is Dr. Lilly and I am School Physician at ISB. The office working hours are from 8:00am – 4:00pm. Throughout the year, the health office deals
with all of the accidents, injuries and change in health condition on all three campuses. My primary office is at the Lower school campus. You can also
reach me on my cell phone: 062/805 6108 or 011/206 9913 during working hours. Any questions can be sent to my E-mail: Please, if you
need any health support, you may contact me in advance to schedule your meeting.

At the beginning of the school year a routine Annual Medical Screening is conducted at all three campuses.

Vision screening has three parts:

1. Checking binocular vision (includes both eyes)
2. Checking monocular vision (includes one by one eye)
3. Checking color vision (grade 4 students)

Hearing screening tests both ears with an instrument which produces high and low-pitched sounds.

Scoliosis /Kyphosis Screening: It involves observation of the child’s back at shoulder, spine, hip, and waist levels. The spine curvature will be measured
with an instrument called a scoliometer (plastic instrument which is pulled along the child’s back.

This year health department is starting a Sport Physical Screening (extended Annual Medical Screening which includes heart and lung check up, blood
pressure etc) of every participant in a sport team. Those students who had Sport screening will not undergo the Annual Medical Screening.

All of the information about the Annual Medical Screening at ISB can be found on our web page:

Please, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

As Always, I stand ready at your service.

Dear ISB community,
The vacation is over, school is back in session and the Fall Activities season gets underway on Monday 30th August (for our middle & high school students).

The school now has an official logo which will be used to promote the schools’ activities program. We hope that you like it:

Once again, signing up for activities will be done online. The system is ready and all students have received their usernames and passwords. The system is so easy to use that even I had no
problems with it:
     1. Access the school website:
     2. Look for the new ISB Dragon logo and click the link:
     3. Use the individual student username and password to access the system (they should have received this in their mailboxes).
     4. Print out and complete the 2 documents (these should be handed back to Mr Hart)

ISB participates in many exchanges with other schools in the region. To keep traveling costs down we have a reciprocal host program agreement with other schools. When traveling on overnight
trips, ISB students are housed by families of the host school. When teams visit ISB, they are housed with the families of ISB students.
Last year we hosted over 250 students from various different schools. It was thanks to the generosity of the ISB community that we were able to do this. This year we will again be hosting a
number of students. The dates and details are listed below.
If your son/daughter participates in our activity program then it is expected that you participate in the hosting program.

• Oct 1-3: MS Boys & Girls Soccer (30 students visiting from Bucharest)
• Nov 3-7: HS Boys CEESA Soccer Tournament (90 visiting students)
• Jan 21-23: HS Boys & Girls Basketball (24 visiting students from Bucharest)
• Feb 2-7: HS CEESA Knowledge Bowl (60 students visiting)
• Apr 8-10: MS Boys & Girls Volleyball (30 students visiting from Bucharest)
• May 12-15: MS Boys Volleyball CEESA Tournament (50 students visiting).

ISB participates in the Central Eastern European Schools Association (CEESA). This includes schools from all over the region. Some of our activities will culminate in a season ending
competition hosted by a CEESA member school. All dates and locations are listed in the Upcoming Events list below.

PTSA Corner
Welcome Back!

Welcome back to the 2010/2011 school year! This year is going to be an action-packed year with many wonderful PTSA events to look forward to. We always need your help to achieve these
community building events so we look forward to seeing many volunteers stepping forward as the year progresses!

Thank You!

The first task is a retrospective one. I thanked all outgoing PTSA Committee Members in the last DD of the year but our dynamic and humble secretary Ms. Celia Graham left herself off the list! So
from a personal level, Celia was my right hand for the whole year last year and I owe her the most enormous debt of gratitude for her hard work, good humor, organization and dedication! She is now
an ISB Board Member so her great work continues!

Welcome Back BBQ, This Saturday!

A VIP reminder to all ISB families and students to join us at the HS Campus this Saturday, August 28th, from 11-2 p.m. for our Welcome Back BBQ Bring a picnic lunch or buy your lunch from Party
Services, catch up with old friends, meet new ones, chat with the staff and the PTSA. Come and look at our new ISB Dragons merchandise! We look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome to New PTSA Member!

We would like to welcome Matilda Waltzing to the ISB PTA—we thank her for volunteering and look forward to her hopping right into the job!

Calling All Seamstresses!

We have had a request from Mrs. Sands for some assistance with making choir uniforms for our HS choir! For any of you Mums (and Dads) who like to sew and are willing to assist in measuring the
children, shopping for fabric and sewing the uniforms...please contact either Mrs. Sands directly or myself!

PTSA Meeting- 1:30 p.m. September 7!

The first PTSA meeting of the year is scheduled for Tuesday, September 7, at 1:30 p.m. in the LS Library. All are welcome to attend and listen/contribute/volunteer. It’s a great way to meet new people
and become active at your child’s school. Halloween!

Volunteers needed to help plan the LS Halloween event. Interested? Please stop by at the BBQ or email:
